Oil weights

Post by Gromit »

Chatting with Steve and Bob yesterday - we got onto the subject of oil weights. BMW recommend 10w40 for the R259's - thing is, if we have another summer like the previous scorcher, is it worthwhile changing to a 20w50? Conversely, would a slightly less viscous lubricant be worth putting for the winter?

I'd be interested to get Delpel's views on this, living in a somewhat 'cosier' climate - do BMW Cyprus say anything about this for your summers?

My dealer has just changed from using a 15w50 to 10w40. It certainly spins faster when starting on these cold mornings.

I understand the theory behind the oil grades but am always confused by the recomendations by manufacturers. My car runs 0w30 all year.

I have convinced my self that the oils are so good now that they stay in grade even when used outside of their designed ambient temperature range.

Gives me one less thing to worry about

The stuff I use is 0W50 and it spins up fine whatever the temperature.

Cool

It's just that I've got (I'd forgotten it was there tbh) 2x4l packs of Mobil 1 car oil, bought in France. It's no use in the car as it needs Diesel-specific oil.

The French Mobil 1's 5w50.

Oh...and costs 18 quid for 4 litres - virtually half the price of in the UK.

I'm sure it will be fine as long as your engine is well run in.

Looks like the next booze cruise could turn into an oil cruise too. :)
