Head light stone chip

Post by Cobbster »

Hi all, As the title suggests Iv'e picked up a stone chip in my head light glass. Iv'e just come back from a 1000mile+ trip to John o Groats and back and when I got off my bike I noticed it. Does any one know if these chips can be fixed ie, using some product from Halfords or is it a new headlight job?. The stone has not gone right through but theres tiny bits of glass rattling around inside which I'll get out when I remove the unit.

Cheers, Cobbster.

There are companies that repair chipped windscreens free of charge. They are paid by the insurance companies as it is cheaper than a replacement. Might be worth a try as the headlight unit probably costs more than a car windscreen. They come to you and fill the chip with a clear compound. Find them in Yellow pages under Windscreens. Geoff. Hi Cobbster,

When i found out how much a new head light for the 11S was,i got one of these

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/BMW-R1100S-Headli ... dZViewItem

This guy delivered fast, its well made and fits well. The only down sides are it fixes with small white (round) velcro pads that are visable thru the cover. The other is,it took him a couple of weeks to leave feedback.

Ventura do a cover too - bit late now I guess!

As for the chip there's some stuff appearing from the states that starts as a resin and then hardens up under UV light. as Geoff says there are also companies that do it for free if you have the right insurance policy (ie not Prestige or Direct Line if I recall). My local rep hangs around on the nearest retail park in a small van doing a lot of business on Saturdays!

Hi all,
Thanks for all your replies. Iv'e fixed it by removing the glass from the unit and filling the damaged area with Loctite Glass bond. Its almost a perfect fix which is good enough for me and my MOT mate who inspected the reair and give it the OK.
The glass took some persuading but persistant fettling with a craft knife eventually got it off then it was a cheap fix.
Rest assured I will be investing in a head light protector before this can happen again!!!!!!!

Cheers, cobbster.
