Oil Filters

Post by scotty »

It's about time to do an oil and filter change on the bike and I was wondering if anyone has any comments to make about the type of oil filter to use. One can get a filter for the s from Halfords for approx £5. Is it critical to use a genuine BMW filter when tacking this job ? I would imagine that the correct oil flow rate through the filter etc is very important for the engine so any info on what you all use would be helpful.

Thanks

I usually use UFI filters from Motorworks. I used a BMW filter once because my local dealer was convenient, if expensive. If you can get one in Halfords for a fiver I'd go for it because I've never heard any suggestion that it's possible to tell the difference between different makes - they're all bound to be capable of flowing far more oil than is actually necessary.

You should change the aluminium washer under the drain plug too.

I don't know. I was on the phone to a mate last night who has seen the light and is trading in an immaculate Aprillia for a 2004 1100s. His brother used to work in a company who made oil filters amongs other things and he could remember him saying that there is a big difference between filters. His brother was reckoning that the filter is even more important than the type of oil used.

I agree with you in that the Halfords job should do the necessary and I cannot see any reason for not using them. Just wondered if there were any good engineering reasons for not using aftermarket stuff.

Get the part code from Halfords for the Champion version they sell (C102??) and ring around one or two motor factors. Give them the code and they should be able to find it off that, rather than a car model. You'll probably find you can pick up that or an equivalent for about £2.50.

I doubt very much if you'll find much difference in performance between any of them.
