Stainless front disc bolts

Fed up with mine being a rusty mess and going to get some stainless ones.

As far as I can gather from the interweb they are just standard M8x25 Button heads - the wavy washers and spacers can be used again?

Is this correct? Ta! :)

That's what I used for my last 3 bikes! Seemed fine to me and my local supplier of the specialist bolts like the caliper pins and rear wheel bolts has no worries about S/S not having the correct tensile strength that some people are concerned with. Hope this helps, but those OEM torx bolts can be a pain to get off.

Chris,

To get the old bolts out get your blow torch and hold it directly over the old torx bolt head for about 20 seconds and the undo the bolt which is held in with loctite.

When fitting the new bolts clean the old thread out first with a tap, failing to do this will almost gurantee that when you fit the new bolt with a drop of new loctite that they will stop half way in.

If you are stuck for a tap let me know I could loan you one of mine.

If enough people are interested I may be able to procure some more rorx head stainless steel m8, from memory I thought that they were 20mm not 25mm.

I changed them on the GS and only had 25mm but the ones that came out were 20mm.

OK have just been out to the garage and for sure the disc bolts were m8x20.

Will check out availability Monday.

Speaking of Stainless..... I have had on order from Motorworks, a s/s bolt kit for the 1100s. Probaly about 6 months.... they say their old supplier sold his business and has had to take it back from the buyer because they had had so many complaints. Even so 6 months seems like a long time to tool up and get ready.

Does any one know who does these.... the kits are great, they minimise wastage... and avoids having to list all the items your self...

Any ideas

Thanks Bob, I would definately be interested if you can get hold of some. I will take advisement on the length, I was only going by something I saw on a website, I haven't take one out yet myself.

The tap is not the problem, I have one of them. No Blowlamp though.... what are the chances of the bolt snapping if I don't use one?

The bolt wont snap but the head may turn out or you might wreck the thread in the wheel.

A kettle of boiling water sometimes works

If you can get some stainless steel screws/bolts for my R1200S then I too would be up for a buy.

As I am not coming to Wales now (on a 3 week course from Monday) I will give you a call in a week or so about my planned route over the Pyrenees.

Update - just found a guy doing a wide variety of "selection packs" of stainless bolts on ebay - for not much more than you'd pay if you cherry picked just the sizes you needed. I've ordered some. :)

Ok after much ado I have found M8x20mm TORX head screws the same as BMW original but in Stainless steel.

£5.50 per set of ten. Or £10 per ten if you want them polished :lol:

Plus postage dont know how much but at a guess £1

Can also bring them to Wales if wanted.

NOW HEAR THIS FOLKS
They are A2 stainless steel Not high tensile but this has been covered on many ocassions.

Let me know who wants what

Steptoe (Neil) on the UKGSER forum puts together stainless bolt kits for the 1150GS, or used to. And they were a lot cheaper than most other people wanted. I expect that 95% of them are common to the S, and they come all labelled up in individual bags with instructions telling you which ones go where.
