Hi Guy's
Well I know my bike is a 1150 r but they all share the same engine apart from a couple of cc's here and there.
My problem is when I go to start my engine after being stood a while she knocks two or three times on the right hand side of the engine as she starts up then all is quiet. Also at dead on 3000rpm she starts to vibe badley and does this all the way to the red line (max rev's).
Up till 3000rpm she is sooooo smooth and then after that she just vibes. Do you think I have a BIG problem looming upon me. I am going to Italy in August from the UK.

Hi Renagade,

My 11'S has exactly the same symptoms as yours. I've posted my concerns about the rattle on startup and was told its the second or so it takes for the oil to make its way to the cylinder heads. Funny its the r/h side, never had that part explained to me. The vibration thing has been posted and commented on loads of times. Apparently its all part of the 'S' experience and not to worry as it subsides at about 10K.

Mine has 20k on the clock so I should have got rid of the vibes ages ago. I am going to adjust the valves againe and the throttle bodies and take it from there.

Rattle from the top end (other then the well-documented cam chain tensioner issue) is probably the rocker end float being out of range. This is never adjusted as part of any service (according to the schedule) but getting it right makes a huge difference to how the engine sounds both at startup and when idling in hot weather. Both hot and cold it's affected by the grade of oil you use too.

If the end float is really badly out it can affect the valve clearances (which won't remain stable) so get the end float checked/sorted, do the valve clearances, balance the throttles and it'll probably run much better.

Hi Sproggy,
You mentioned cam chain tensioner, I notice the R/H side one is on the bottom of the engine, if this is the culprit in my case do you know how easy it is to replace it?

It's the left hand chain tensioner that tends to cause problems - information about replacement here:

I keep meaning to go to the dealer to order the parts - I intend to do this job before the bike goes back on the road in the spring.

Rattle from the right hand side is less likely to be cam chain. If you park your bike on the side stand the oil will tend to drain out of the RH cylinder making the noise from excessive rocker end float worse than it might otherwise be due to lack of lubrication. I used to have a RH rattle but since adjusting everything now the right hand side is quiet and I can hear the LH cam chain rattle better :?
