I know the posting is in the wrong place,but the offer runs out soon and others are like me,i don't check all the threads!!!!

I afraid i have a fetish for tools!!!! but finding them can be a hassle when various ones are in different cases,Halfords have an offer on for a complete tool kit reduced down to 100 quid with everything in including all the latest torque bits and spanners and sockets,and rachet ring spanners,beleave me it's an absolute bargain,and all in one case te-boot.

I've got the same, bought in separate case's must have cost double,at the same quality.

I've got plenty of tools for most jobs, but a bloke can never have too many...

Never had ratchet spanners though - always fancied a set.

I think the Halfords Pro stuff is OK(excellent value for money).Snap ON is great quality/design etc,but personally I don't like the feel/weighting/balance of it.
I'm a big admirer of Facom,Britool,and Teng,but like you say.....well crafted tools are a godsend

Bailey, I saw a set of Facom sockets once in a tool shop. They were lined up on the counter like a row of Rolex watches. Trouble is, they weren't that much cheaper either...

The term 'exquisite metallic beauty' didn't do them justice.

I'd never knock Halfords tools - had most of mine now for 15+ years and not once has a single item let me down/given way. Even the 1/2" drive ratchet wrench, which has been used as a twatting* implement on many an occasion for inserting wheel spindles, still works as well as the day it was bought.

Having been in the tool trade for over 25 years I have to say with all honesty that Snap On is an Indoctrination.

If you use an item on a daily basis it has to be the very best or what you percive to be the best if you only use that item once a month/week then why pay say £10 for a spanner that you could pay £2.50 for it still has a lifetime gurantee.

SnapOn are VERY good but they aint great they are VERY expensive if you want good tools well made and have a desire for something that feels right try Stahwille, German made very slim and just feel right (and almost as expensive).

Closely followed by Facom,Britool & Gedore although Facom & Britool are now one in the same company as Facom (French) bought Britool & Sykes Pickavant a couple of years ago. (Bastards).

Dont get me started life is so much more simple restoring cars from the 1920's

Interesting you should say that Bob; a mate of mine who's a techy on military aircraft (he basically services jet engines on Tornados) ordered me to wash my mouth out when talking about Snap-On. Reckoned they were trading on a 'name' and nowt much else. Good Stuff admittedly, but not in the same ball park as the very best. He also mentioned the German stuff you talk about in not unfavourable terms.

Go into just about any Commercial workshop and you will see wall to wall SnapOn cabinets they have the marketing plan completly right Yes Sir that will be £XXX.XX yours for only £7.50 per week for the rest of your life.

4 Guys at my place have TOOL BOX'S that cost over £3000.00 YES tool box's forget the kit that is inside them.

Wellllll i'm glad to see i'm not the only one!!! Snap On is Ok it's bit like haveing a 350mph motorbike!!!!.

The Halfords nowhere days is 'Lifetime'so it'll stand it's ground with anything,although i have to say i've got a cross section of stuff.

What i liked about the set is,it's all together as opposed to sometimes i've got 3/5 cases open which is a real pain,and a torque set is becomeing a evel necessity,i paid 50 quid for a set while on Holiday in Helsinki(how sad is that!!) and a full set rachet ring spanners cost £150 and that was 5 years!!

Non of it did me any good today with the electrical glitch i had with the S which mean't not going to NI on it,took Gus all of 3 minutes to spot the obvious!!! doh!!!

IMO Its like most things in life, you get what you pay for (ie; a flash badge to tell everyone else how much you paid for it) and occasionally, top quality. However, top quality is not always needed but is usually quite welcome by most and enhances the users percievement of the experience. Anyone who has had 15mm ringspanner break on the when giving it max torque will know what I mean No such failures with SO.

I have a few Halfords, Facom and Brittool bits and bobs in my toolbox alongside the SO stuff and can honestly say it all does the job it was bought for.






that said.........I am currently building a nice little 1/4 drive Snap on socket set via ebay

Halfords ! F*cking Halfords !! dirty thievin robbin bast*rds more like, though admitedly convenient on occasion. Trouble with Halfords is that they've turned into Max Plonker suppliers and are no longer a proper car spares place and any spares they do stcok they charge like the f*cking highlanders for !

Anyroad that aside, I bought one of their 'Professional' tookits about 4 or 5 years back and whilst it's pretty good ( sounds like the one that's on offer ratchet spanners, metric/imperial etc etc 150 pieces I think .... ) the lifetime guarantee isn't worth poo in a pail. If it's a moving part, sorry sir that's excluded, if it's an extension bar sorry sir that's excluded too, if it's a..... well you get the idea. Mabey I was just unlucky and got a dodgy set or one of the first ones that were perhaps not as good as later kits.

Mostly reasonabley well made I have to say, seems pretty durable for the most part, and covers most eventualities, but I just wish they'd drop the false marketing of being a "Lifetime Guarantee"
