R12S THROTTLE ECCENTRIC REMOVAL

Post by feralworks »

Just bought another 12S after a gap of 18 months or so because I missed it & a really, really clean low miler came up for sale! Unfortunately I forgot about that damned eccentric throttle operation that gives a non linear action & means you have to open the throttle quite a bit to get any response. I hated it then & seem to hate it even more now, it truly messes up downshifts  Did anyone ever find a decent solution to this?

Hmmm... That's what I thought  There was the 'remove the rollers' post, but that doesn't really work, & the 'Schwabenmax cam in the throttle grip' mod which also doesn't help with the early part of the throttle movement. Plus it's near £70 :(
What the hell were BMW thinking of ???

Isnt't there the option of fitting HP2S Throttle bodies and associated gubbins? maybe available from the race fraternity?

I got used to it in about 50 miles and then it didn't bother me at all, even though it was odd to start with.
Just one of the characteristics to get used to and then remember, when you swap bikes on a regular basis,
Just call it "character" :D .

Unfortunately both my much modified R100 & my Krauser have very quick action throttles fitted so swopping to the R12S it feels like the cables snapped!

According to RealOEM, the complete throttle body assemblies are the same part number R12S / HP2S. The throttle assy on the bars has a different part number though but don't know what the difference is yet

Yep, checked parts numbers and there are 3 different numbers - 2 for 12s - heated or unheated grips and 1 for unheated for HP2. There must be someone out there that can enlighten us!!

This is the modification Hugo ( congoman ) had done to his old bike that I now own. I’ve never ridden a 1200s other than this one but throttle pick up is just like any other bike I’ve owned.

Dave, I fitted the throttle gubins when I had my 1200S. Well worthwhile imo.
It made a significant difference and until I got used to it I had to remind myself that it was fitted, otherwise it would catch me out as it would leap forward like a scolded cat.
In the wet I realised why BMW designed it as they did. Those big pots dish out lots of torques, as JC says.

Is that the Schwabenmax (spelling?) thingy?

Yep, that looks like the part. I don’t recognise the seller as I bought mine from Gus and only ever saw them advertised on German eBay at the time.
It’s not a perfect solution by any means. Iirc Gus was looking for a better answer at the cams on the throttle bodies for a modification to his racing bike, hence selling the part.
It worked for me, every time I moved off it made me chuckle. It’s a lot of money for such a small bit of plastic, but the difference it makes is certainly noticeable.

It's basically a mechanical traction control :) Considering the R12S has the same torque as an S1000RR but at 6500 rpm rather than 9700 perhaps it is needed...
