Tyre plugs - advise needed

Can the "string" type plugs be inserted with the onboard R1100S plug tool?

Want to minimise the additional amount of tools needed on the bike and need new plugs

I believe so the tools that come with Kit and the BMW tools are pretty much the same thing

I found the plugs difficult to get through the hole, ruining 2 before I got the 3rd through. The "Special Cement" was like a chewing gum after 17 years onboard.

People seem to prefer the string plugs and they seem easier to fit so was thinking of simply replacing the plugs with the strings, keeping the O2 canisters, reamer and possibly getting some more "Special Cement" although I think it's not needed...

Hence the question if the stock tool can be used for the string plugs

I think I would go on Amazon and do a search for motorcycle tyre repair kits. Read the reviews from the best sellers. I bought a kit in a soft case that goes with me when I go away, I also bought a 12 volt compressor for about a fiver, put a bmw 12v plug on it and all I seem to do is mend everyone else`s punctures!! Bin your manicure set and take a soft case punc repair kit with you. Bmw ones worked for me but each system has its own plug/ tool.

Yeah, I see what you are saying.

But considering I have everything bar the cement and plugs in the kit it's a convenient solution to just get some plugs and drop it in there.

Got a 12V pump as well, the same model that is currently for sale at £9.99 at many petrol stations - highly recommendable although mine is marked RAC...

It'll probably be ok , the tool supplied for string type repairs is just like a large Sewing/ darning needle with a hole at the end that you thread the string through. The oe supplied tool is "open " on one side which could allow the string to slip off on insertion/removal.

I prefer the rubber mushroom type plugs.
Done 2 repairs, both for others luckily.

How do you get the string type tool out after having pushed through the string, I thought it went in folded like a V...?

As per the instructions you thread the string through the needle half way , insert the tool with string through the hole,(there will still be string visible ) twist it twice and trim off the string as the tool clears the tyre on removal. Ideal for roadside get you home repairs. I usually remove the tyre afterwards and use a more permanent internal repair /replace the tyre depending on damage.
