NEC bikeshow

Post by dave the german »

Anyone attending Monday26th? I may have a spare ticket. PM me if you are. I won't know for certain until tomorrow but if you PM me a phone number I'll get back to you - the ticket is free so first come first served. It would of course mean meeting up at the NEC on the morning but I'm staying just off J9 of the M42 on Sunday night. I must stress MAY have a spare ticket

This is the only thread I have seen discussing the bike show (unless I missed one). I guess that's because it was completely underwhelming.

£19 to get in, plus a tenner to park was extortion, pure and simple.

The most noticeable thing was the age of us punters. If I had to guess, I would say the average age was 45. The manufacturers might not lose sleep, as they are looking to China and India where they can sell a trillion bikes, but the industry in the UK will be struggling 10 years from now.

I made a point of looking at my old bike show pictures from the 90s. There I am, sitting on bikes, surrounding by crowds of people in their 20s wanting to look at the latest bikes, barely room to step back and take a pic its so crowded.

Yesterday I walked around in empty space with a handful of other old duffers shaking my head at a load of uninspiring bikes and bemoaning the price of a beer.

The average age of motorcyclists in the UK is 47. Gives you a clue as to what motorcycles will sell better here. I'm 37 by the way.

well that's the NEC done for another year :) not too bad but very packed on Saturday.

I did find it amusing when on passing the BMW club stand they accosted me to get me to join, I quipped "You wouldn't want me as a member" to be responded with "of course we would, it's open to everyone". So I advised the nice lady that I was banned for life for upsetting Mr John King the forum admin. She pointed to a man a few feet away and said I should take it up with him, him being Richard Boyd the president. I advised her that it was he who had banned me and told her to mention the name Steve Parry ... as I wandered off whistling smugly :)

Glad to see business picked up. Maybe people were waiting to get paid. November was a long month.

Did they have your picture pinned up behind the stand? Do not speak to this man?

I was tempted and thought better of it as they're unlikely to have a change of heart and I feel so passionately about it I'd quite likely have gotten a bit shouty and got arrested or something :) So I thought discretion was the better part of valour etc :) I'm sure there's a "Verboten" book under the counter tho'

I attended on Saturday, never really being a big fan of the event but we meet up with friends and the girls attend the Good Food Show

Personally for me I actually enjoyed it. Was more interested in the retro bikes especially that lovely little Kawasaki 800 custom. Never even bothered to look at a sports bike.

Was puzzled to see small cars on show that could be driven by 16 year olds on moped licsences. "New european classification Sir, it`s not a car it`s a quadricycle" Yeah, right what next?

:?
Fiat Panda.
Fiat Scudo (with speedblock, pipe carrier, reversing sensors, reversing camera, tow bar, some new rust and Fake Plumber logo)

started out with nothing, still have most of it left.

It was a strange show - not sure I was impressed but pleased I went. Steve, I walked past the BM owners club stand and had a browse - they didn't try to get me to join - not sure whether I should be pleased or upset!! But, I was tempted to ask if they accepted people who had their own opinions cos I'd heard they banned people if they were a little "radical"
