I've yet to see a 'modern' tv with as good a picture as our 'old' Pan TX32 PD30. It's a dirty great behemoth of a telly and weighs a ton, but I dread the day it goes bang.
The only good thing about the new tv's is that they can be mounted flat against a wall.
The new TV we bought before christmas,replaced a Sony that we bought in 96,which replaced a Toshiba we bought in 1980 after a very wet bikeing holiday in Germany that was cut short and we bought the TV with the money we didn't spend,we still have it as the bedroom TV and it's used every morning and night,it's nearly 28 years old.
crt's bought in the eighties were very well made. crt's in general last a very long time. i still have an 18 yr old 14" sony. my parents sony died after 22yrs. you won't get that with plasma or lcd i'm afraid. i sold a philips tv to a friends parents (i used to work in a tv shop) in 1981 and they only replaced it two years ago.
crt is dead... long live crt. you won't find anything else in a tv studio.
I'm mindful that 1080p can only be optimal when receiving 1080p signal from HDDVD or BlueRay - So as I mainly watch movies rather than eastenders and would therefore upgrade to a 1080p player :
- what's the best large screen (50"+) tv for action movies that would
- also make a decent fist of Sky HDTV (already a SkySD subscriber) and
- SDTV transmissions?
I'd also want to future proof for iFilm becoming reality but outside major conurbations it's difficult to get better than a 2mb connection. (stands back in full appreciation of two new hand grenades being rolled in)
If you are going for a BIG screen then just compare an lcd with a plasma and on the LCd under very fast moving objects, you get pixelisation (ie a speedboat going along and look at the wash).
I tried to explain the 1080 thing and the poor feeds to my mum and dad yesterday, telling them that when they got teir new 42" telly back home that was bought yesterday, they'd more than likely be disappointed with the picture given that they have normal aerial feed.They ignored all that and bought the telly and are now dropping comments about the picture not being so good as it was in the shop! Thats what a nice hd dvd input can do with all the nice cables.
We're still using a Sony Trinitron 25" and B&O 29?"crt and to be honest Im not planning to change until digital actually comes here (approx 2011!!)
For the record, I still watch my tele on a 32" Philips CRT my g/ma bought somewhere in the '80ies. I am in no hurry change, as I personally feel that regular television broadcasts with its sub 500 lines PAL look like crap on high-res flatpanels, regardless of the technology. And I may be watching like 1 hour a day. At most.

i couldn't say about ifilm as most of what i do is commercial based and no-one has asked for it yet. i shall have to swot up for my domestic work. that's a bugger because actually i too am a bit of a luddite at heart. it's odd that i find myself in this industry.
Incidentally, although movies (shot on film) will be 1080p, pretty much all HD television produced (certainly by the BBC, others will follow suit) will be 1080i due to the severe motion judder of 1080p video capture.
1080p does not have a better quality image than 1080i, unless you freeze frame the video. Moving pictures are much more pleasant and appear sharper on 1080i.
One of the reasons HD can look so good, is that many programme makers still insist on "Filmising" ordinary 625 (actually only 576 active lines) video. This process effectively reduces the resolution to 288 horizontal lines (x 720) and in comparison to HD looks shite. It also introduces motion judder. Standard 625 line TV is perfectly adequate for most sized UK homes, if only all of its available quality was preserved.

Quite, I actually bought a 46" Sony LCD after much reading of magazines, forums etc.
I got it on a price-match at John Lewis, and the picture was so sh!t that I sent it back and got a refund.
I'sticking with my Sony crt, ugly or not (THE TV). It's miles better than LCD.
I have a perfectly fine phillips 32" 100hz crt but I always look at new products, but when I spoke to people about upgrading I was told by an honest salesman that it will still be a while before a plasma or lcd will come close to what I have already with regard to the pixelating(if thats a real word)and the lyp synch issues mentioned previously, So fingers crossed mine doesn`t go bang.
