"Masterbike 2007"

Postby BMW-Fahrer » Mon May 21, 2007 10:43 pm

Every year the same procedure.16 moto-mags from around the globe under the umbrella of Randy Mamola meet on a spanish track, this year Almeria to find out which is the fastest bike, the Masterbike of the year.Mostly fast guys and no fast talking/slow riding yournos do the testing.Last years Masterbike was the Aprilia Mille. The Masterbike 2007 wasn't the Mille,it wasn't the new R1 or GSXR 1000 either, the title stayed in italy. It wasn't the new Duc 1098 either, actually the Daytona 675 beat it,it is the MV Agusta F4R 312.The fastest bike in the world on a straight line was also the fastest around Almeria.
How did BMW sport, sport, sport bike do?The one without to put any panniers and missus?I guess everyone was prepared to be knocked out by the sport-boxer but the R1200S unfortunately never showed up.I don't know why if the mags did not deem it to be worth sine they finally found a way to put the panniers or if BMW did not supply a bike for whatever reason...
Also no K1200R-S on the grid.
I'm disappointed that the sport, sport, sport bike wasn't part of the challenge for the best sportbike for 2007 for whatever reason.Of course they also never ran the R1100S since Masterbikes first getogether in 1998 but the R1100S at least had the excuse that it was also a capable tourer next to being a sportbike.
The R1200S doesn't have this excuse so it would be interesting to find out if it was the mags or BMW not giving the boxer chance to fight.
Maybe next year the HP version...

If you were looking for the fastest bike around a track, presumably a 'flying lap' sort of arrangement with the best time winning, you wouldn't bother pitching a 120bhp 'sports' BMW against a Fireblade/ZX-10R/GSXR-1000/Ducati 1098/MV F41000 etc. All these bikes are designed to win races in WSB, the balance between this and suitability for the road varying according to the manufacturer. The R1200S is a road sports bike - never intended to take part in, let alone win, races. Whether BMW declined to provide a bike or the mags didn't ask for one is academic - it wouldn't have stood a chance anyway.

Yes, maybe they'd consider the HP version next year, but don't count on it. If you want the fastest bike around a track don't buy a BMW. Any BMW.

BMW-Fahrer , we've not heard from you for a while, been busy?

Masterbike's not hard to find:-

Article

As the categories were changed to "The twin-cylinder and four-cylinder Superbike categories were replaced by Japanese Superbike and Italian Superbike", there clearly was no place for a BMW twin to realistically enter :)

The sport, sport, sportbike no show at Masterbike

Postby BMW-Fahrer » Tue May 22, 2007 3:06 pm

Where you find the Masterbike article? In most european moto-mags.Probably in MCN as Michael Neeves rom MCN was one of the riders...B.t.w. they had 3 classes were the fastest bike of each class competed in a finl for the title.600 with the Daytona 675 included.Daytona won.1000 were the R1 won.Italian Superbikes were the MV won.In the end it was the MV on top, then the R1 and Daytona 3rd...
The R1200S and K1200R-S could have had their own class.Would have been nice to see especially after all the advertisement hype and nowhere top put missus and panniers if the 1200 heavyweight boxer would at least would have knocked out bikes half it's engine size.
And if it a road sportsbike than why offering not all the useful options that made the R1100S such a nice sports-tourer.No, they advertised it as a track-sports,sports,sports bike and then for whatever reason did not show...Just would be nice to know if BMW was innocent and the magazines did it or if they got cold feet.Anyways who knows/cares?!
Masterbike or not enjoy your rides.
I'll enjoy mine, the R1100S the Masterbike for the road...

What utter bollox :laughing3: I suppose they could of had a class for German two cylinder boxer engined bikes beginning in R and ending in 1200S but then I guess the entry would have been fairly limited :? Probably wouldn't of come first in that class either as BMW probably wouldn't have sent a bike

If you bought a 1200S to compete with jap 4 cylinder superbikes on track then you have wasted your money. That is not to say that the S is not a fantastic bike to ride on track (or on the road for that matter) but a race bike it ain't. Oh..except the ones that raced at Le Mans

Based on the apparent riding 'ability' of a large portion of 'sportsbike' riders at a recent HOPP Rider training session at Cadwell Park, I suspect a well piloted R1200S would be a match for most sports bikes on the road.

Ironically, the slowest bike round the Cadwell track during free lapping was a MV Agusta F4

By the way PBBoxer..well said

Perhaps there is genius in these threads... Piet Mondrian painted variations on an abstract composition for over 30 years without ever tiring - such extraordinary dedication to a repetitive and exhaustive investigation of singular thematics is to be applauded..

I look forward to the next enlightening and meaningful commentary on the ever insightful and always useful motorcycle media and bmw marketing.

keep up the good work.

I finally have the answer. They are just fair sportsmen and wanted to give the others a chance not to be knocked out by the sportsboxer with nowhere to put any panniers...
Those advertisement geniuses/trolls
PS:I know they finally found a way to put the panniers on the new S but the 21 tank from the MV is still not fitting, that sport-touring-bastard from italy...

I thought I'd missed one or two off the list..... Wasn't meant to be exhaustive, just representative. Apologies for any disrespect to Yamaha :salute:
