Missed Servicing. need help

Post by high_tower »

hey all,

have a few questions.

firstly dif oil how much am i meant to put in when i change it.
gear oil as above?

does anyone have any tips for servicing my bike??

i'd also like to thank the wazak who owned my bike before me (no one from this site).I found it hunting a bit at 4000rpm and put that down to the chip that had been put in.

so today set on a mission to swap it for the original. as i worked my way through i took the air filter out. k&n that could have not been cleaned in over 10k miles. it was black with roughly a 1cm of crap sitting on top of it.

the pipe to the airbox also had been snapped and patched up with fibre glass then duck tape. it was so bad it just crumbled when i put my hand on it to see what the problem was.

thanks guys,

well managed to construct a air 'chute' to get me through till a new one arrives. spent about 45 cleaning the k&n filter, still might replace it.

thinking if that is the state of things i should get one with the service tomorrow. just wondering what needs to be serviced at the 12,000 as i think the previous owner skipped it. the bike is now at 16,000 so i think i should give it a full services.

looking for fluid levels when i change them really.
such as dif oil,
gear oil

and anything else important to change?

Hi
Gearbox oil
800 ml approx. If memory serves me correctly,it should just touch the bottom of the fill plug hole with the bike upright and level.Put fully synth in,it will make a big difference.

Diff oil
250 ml approx.Again fill to bottom of fill hole.Mineral oil here will be fine as cogs aint been shifted.

Just clean the filter and reoil. No need to replace.I,m 99% sure i have a complete standard snorkal in the shed. You can have it for nowt if you collect or you pay P&P.
The bike is a piece of piss to service if you know how to wield a spanner.
A twin max or carbtune is a must for getting the bike running great.Do a search and all will be revealed.
Anything else just ask.

gus how much do you want for postage? that would be great. Mill BMW dont really seem to be that helpful with finding parts for me.

cheers lads. I'm pretty glad i found this forum, think after the last day or so i'd be in tears other wise.

hi, I put a video of how to check and adjust valves, alternater belt, balance carbs and something else. It was demonstrated on a R1150r but the principle will be the same for the R1100s. Unless anyone else knows better. I only posted it a couple of days ago under maintenance video. It may be of help, or at least give you in insight as to what dealers do ( or not ).

Go to BMW MOTARRAD, then maintenence plans, choose the model and then print one off. Go down the list one by one, I always get them laminated when finished, put it in a folder ------ It will lok good when you come to sell.

The design of the standard air box (filter laying horizontal) means that the filter will clog with crap VERY quickly because it collects every particle that comes in the intake. There's no reason to assume that it hasn't been cleaned in 10k miles - it'll get cacked up in half that distance.

The only solution to this (other than changing/cleaning the filter very frequently) is fitting an SJ filter - a far better design.

It's the hard plastic piece that runs from the air box and connects to the flexible hose coming from the front.

how would you like me to pay?
