My indicators are flashing realy quick and turning off
Hi everyone i hope you can help me on this and give some help on finding the problem/s
Ok when the bike is cold and run slowly the indicators work fine but after a minute or two its flashing like mad.if indicator is turned on and off a few times it will start ok but it will go the next time to flash quick again and later its dangerousley stopping flashing mid indication yikes the m.o.t is next month aswell
any help would be appreciated

Check all connections for indicators,it could be a duff bulb also.If a bulb aint working the indicator on the same circuit will flash quicker.If all is ok with connections and bulbs then it could be the relay at fault.It is located in the left hand pod as you sit on the bike behind the nose.Its the last relay furthest away from the front of the box.

While you're checking the relay, also check that you don't have problems with the wires coming from the fuse pod or relay box rubbing against the frame and rubbing through the insulation, shorting/breaking any wires.
You really need only two tools: WD-40 and duct tape. If it doesn't move and it should, use WD-40. If it moves and shouldn't, use the tape.

IIRC isn't the emergencey flasher circuit using another relay? if this is the case check the wiring to the relay base for conventional and the relay itself
Looking at the service Adobe file, (2) Relief Relay (aye?), (4) Indicator Damping (do they need to get wet?), (5) Flasher Unit (your get put in prison for that!)

(5) Rearmost port box

Certainly sounds like the relay to me then - I wouldn't expect chaffed or trapped wiring to exibit exactly the same problem all of the time - relays are cheap anyway and easy to swap so give it a go

HI JASON M LAST WEEK I HAD THE FULL FRONT FRAME REPLACED TAKING ALL THE WIRING OFF AND PUTTING IT BACK IN PLACE BUT IT STILL FLASHED QUICK SO I THINK LIKE YOU SAY THE RELAY COULD BE AT FAULT.OK THE FIRST THING IS WHERE DO I GET A NEW RELAY FROM TO TEST IT AND WHERE DO I FIND IT ON THE BIKE.WILL I NEED TO TAKE ANY FAIRING OFF.

i have just rung motorworks for a relay and was told that the relay is for both indicators and hazzards (the hazzards are fine)and it £67 is this what i need cos it dont sound cheap to me at all even second hand was £20 (where do i draw the line with the expense of it all.
i am starting to get a bit annoyed with this sack of s**t if it isnt an oil leak (back wheel oil seal and front filler cap have both gone now)it is something else.
i think it is time to say goodbye to IT buy something japanese that goes like spit easily and just needs a clean now and again.i can honestly say since owning this bike i have not had one weekend where it hasnt given me a job every saturday for something else that needs fixing or looking at i think i would rather own a ducati at the moment i may aswell for the hassle i get to keep it running.it is a lovely bike but in my opinion is overrated and under engineered (gets down off high horse)dont get me wrong the bike is a blast to ride it is just all the little shitty problems it has i mean the oil cap going cost 92p and 30 seconds to replace but having a new £800 a/stars suit on with new spidi boots covered in oil is not a warming experience i might aswell go back 40 years and own a crappy old bsa if i had a love of oil

Seriously though, I understand what you're saying. My S was a pain in the arse for the first six months or so, with bits failing left right and centre, but it calmed down after a while and now just gives me the odd challenge every few months or so.

B/S, just had a look in my workshop manwell for you. There appear to be 2 relays for the indicators. One is the flasher unit and the other is an "Indicator Damping" unit. If the flashers are going like the clappers could it be the Damper unit? It looks like the hazards and the indicators share the same flasher unit as there's only one in the pod (it's in the L/H pod as you sit on the bike BTW). You could try ringing MotorWorks to price the damper and to ask their opinion. Meanwhile I'll try to dig out the part number for you. What year is your bike, and just out of interest what is the mileage?

There are a number of other relays listed but it's all a bit vague and doesn't tell us what they are for. The damper unit I was talking about is in the R/H pod and is the first unit you come to at the back of the pod, it looks like quite a big bugger! Maybe you can have a look and see if the part number is stamped on it somewhere? The flasher relay is in the opposite side and again is the first relay you come to at the back of the pod, again it's quite a large thing.

hello again this is very strange took the bulbs out this afternoon just to double check agian and all i have done is taken the bulb 12v 21w out of the left hand side front replaced it with an old suzuki bulb 12v 21w i had floating about it still went like a disco then checked the back ones (these are not bmw ones)they are those small carbon ones.took the bulb out.this 12v 23w put it back in and it wouldnt work at all on the left hand side until i pushed on the earth wire within the back indicator and it slowed right down to normal set it back together agian and it discoed on me so i took it out for a closer look and started to clean the conections put it back together and hey ho its all seems to be normal again for over two minutes on each side engine running everything not a disco strobe in site i am going out in an hour or two to check it out after a run ill let you know how goes it. cheers for now

Hmmm... the 'fast flash due to incorrect wattage lamps syndrome'.
Nikk's (secondhand) SV had fast flashing indicators as well until finding the front and rears were aftermarkets with 5W lamps in them! Also, the earthing arrangement left a little to be desired. 21 Watt lamps and a dose of foil in the back of the housing made them somewhat more noticable.
Funny what people will do for the sake of 'fashion'.
