motor cut out!!!!

Post by Pheasant Plucker »

Only had the 1100s a few months so I dont really know my way around the bike yet.
So, the sun came out ,took the bike for a spin, after ten miles the engine cut out.
I tried to start it, she fired once then nothing but after getting a tzxi home and returning with my pick-up the bloody thing started ..............
Is there a common electrical fault with these bikes that everyone exept me knows about?

Hope someone may have an answer.
Thanks, Paul.

Yup, check for chaffing where the wires go over the frame rails on the LH side under the faring.
Pauls got some pics. He'll probablybe along in a bit with the right link....

Hi
Could be electrical as harry has suggested.Sure you didnt flood it when trying to restart?Sidestand switch can also be the culprit.Funny it started after you returned to it.

If the motor turns over and you can hear the fuel pump kick in when you turn it on, it might be the halls sensor. It usually shows up when the motor is warm. After a couple of cut outs it'll stop altogether. Cost me about two hundred at a BMW dealer. Good luck.

I've had the bike running in the shed tonight and you would not think there is anything wrong with it at all.
I tried the side stand when it stopped first.
Thanks for all your help.
These modern bikes are a bit of an unknown to me.
Never had a fuel injected bike with all these sensors etc.
I will ride around close to home this weekend and see what happens.

p.s. got a taxi home when the bike stopped.
picked the bike up on my toyota and blew the head gasket and rad on the way back!!!
S**T really does happen!!

How old is the bike and how many miles has it done? Mine kept doing this (usually when filtering through traffic on the motorway). It turned out to be the wire from the ignition to the fusebox (that gets constantly bent when steering) had developed a break/chaff. Cost me about £20 for a 2nd hand one from Motorworks.

Thanks Jason, I'll check this out as it sounds so much cheaper than a hall sensor.

The Halls sensor is just a little thing that sits on a plate behind the alternator belt wheel on the end of the crank - you will be able to pick up a 2nd hand one no probs if it's that, and they're dead easy to replace. I think that if the problem is intermittent though it's less likely to be the sensor (hopefully)

I have run the bike for about 20 minutes in the shed tonight, I've moved the wires back and forth but not found a fault.
I cant imagine it could be the ignition trigger because it just keeps running O.K.
I will have to go for a longer ride and if there is a problem perhaps Carole Nash or those nice people in the RAC may bring me home.
I must get to the bottom of the problem as I intend to ride to the south of France later in the year.

Thanks for all your suggestions, Paul.[/quote]

Bob aka Boxerdog posted a photo last year of the weak wires under the ignition switch, cant remember the title of the thread. The other favourite chafe point is under the left fairing cover around the long fuse box.
Oyster. 1999 R1100S. Almost original.

The "Search" function (top right on the forum pages) is your friend.

Boxerdog's post is here.

My post about chaffed wires is here.

Paul
You really need only two tools: WD-40 and duct tape. If it doesn't move and it should, use WD-40. If it moves and shouldn't, use the tape.
