Hi,
New to this forum and would like a little feed back about the finish on the R11. Mine is an 03 in standard trim except a Remus exhaust.
The bike has suffuered a lot of corrision on forks, yokes and disc mounting bolts, all of which BMW have replaced under warrenty.
I guess that others with have had simiar problems but any suggestions as to help prevent it in the first place, bearing in mind that washing the thing is not my fav past time, gratefully recieved!
Hi
Respray lower fork legs and forkbrace with non water based paint would be a start. Not that hard really.Replace all fasteners with stainless steel.Maybe put some protective film on front engine cover.
Keep clean and use a protective film(anti corrosion spray)on frame and engine parts during winter usage.

It amazes me that BMW have had so much trouble with this water based finish but still use it on spares, I belive the new models use a different finish.
I've seen the stainless fixing kit from Motorworks, any good? (For £160 it should be!)
Do not, repeat DO NOT!Spend £160 on stainless.Bob on the board managed to knock kits out for about £20.I dont think he does them now,but source them yourself to save a fortune.

I've had a couple of stainless kits off this site http://www.desmoparts.com/index.htm. Been pleased with the speed of dispatch and was quickly sent a couple of extra screws FOC when those in the kit didn't quite match-up with my bike (the kit must have originally been put together around a US spec bike).
Also discovered a local guy http://www.gmstevens.co.uk/ who sells stainless screws etc all as individual items.

Check out this thread on ukGSer. Steptoe (Neil) is selling stainless kits for the GS for £40 delivered - I believe he gets the stainless from the supplier Bob used to work for after I tipped him off.
£160 is a blatant rip off and as Gus says, don't do it!

Forgive me father for I have sinned... ex S owner moved onto pastures new with four cylinders and a chain... and back to a twin, albeit in a V.
Thanks for that guys, just saved me a forture.
I got the Remus from Motorworks and it was a very good price, guess they make their profit elsewhere!!
I've ordered a kit from desmoparts in the states for $50 (about £30) delivered. Will let you know what it's like when it turns up.
Fixings turned up from desmoparts in about a week.
Not all the bits that I expected, sub frame fixings, disc mounting bolts etc but some I wouldn never have thought of - foot peg rubber fixings and number plate light mount.
Didn't use the mirror fixings as the orignal look better, other than that, very good.
Just in case you didnt know all the black painted screws on the S are stainless steel, just drop them in some nitromores and then polish.
Boxerdog,
Thanks for that. I thought they where as the black was flaking off but was'nt sure. Why do they paint stainless?? Seems to be a real mish mash of materials on the bike, guess it all saves a few pennys on each bike so more profit.
Am finally coming round to the replace fixings idea. The desmoparts link shown above only seems to supply fairing fasteners the like - I don't mind the flaking black, its the rusting grey I'm not keen on!.
Does anyone know where I can get a complete set of front disc bolts, front caliper bolts and front engine cover bolts, mine are starting to look a bit fishing fleet.... with winter coming I reckon if I don't replace em soon, we're into sheared bolt territory next spring...
