Rear wheels to fit R1100s to the wider 17x5.50

Postby Scarley » Tue May 19, 2020 6:46 pm

Hi, has anybody fitted an R1150 RT wheel to an R1100 s non ABS? They look the same wheel, I had no confirmation from BMW Motorwerks in Holmfirth, and the wheel looks the same with the studs for the disc? Should I have any concerns?
Thanks in advance
Chris
many thanks for any help
Kind regards
Chris

Hello Chris,
I would say most likely..
But you might use realoem (https://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/partgr ... 432_&mg=36) to check.

A 5.5" or 5" rim will obviously fit an 11S I didn't think they (5.5") were fitted to Rt's. The offset of the brake disc is where any potential problems will be I'd imagine. The disc offset is determined by the disc mounting posts and the ABS ring design which varies with later brake systems (thicker / thinner) . The disc mounting posts may be machined shorter on some models. The easiest way is to offer the wheel up to the bike noting all of the above (if incorrect the disc won't align correctly with the caliper) plus the length of the wheel bolts can vary I think and will need to be checked .
If you can ensure that each bike had the same braking system/caliper , that would be a start.

I know what I'm about to say has been mentioned above but take a detailed look at the caliper - it may look the same but machined dimensions for the mounting point means the offset is different. Some callipers from a 1200RT look the same as those fitted to the R1200S but I'm assured they do not fit

I don’t remember anyone ever giving the advice “fit an R1150 wheel” over the last 15yrs - when someone was looking for the wider R1100s wheel.

Makes me think they are not the same beast?

Great advice and I will I did not pay that much for the wheel so I’m can certainly try, it looks like such a common wheel but the more I look the differences become more apparent, and BMW have deep pockets for such variations
Thanks again
many thanks for any help
Kind regards
