R1100S Engine won't spin over

Postby KTM AL » Sun Jan 05, 2020 9:39 am

Hi All
Before my last post about cutting out, the bike would only just turn over , I did test the battery with a Sealey tester and it indicated it was ok,( 18 month old Yuasa). Anyway I bought a new one, after checking the starter and earth terminals, all ok.
Installed the new gel battery and the same thing happened.
I removed 2 spark plugs and still the same .
As it was on the ramp and paddock stand I put the bike in top gear and turned the rear wheel by hand ,all ok .
Pushed the starter button and it span over fast. So I put the plugs back in and it started fine. And has done so since.
Was it a stuck starter motor?
Bike is a 2002 R1100S with only 9000 miles and mint so not all gammed up with road dirt old grime.
Any Ideas ?

I reckon that is a possibility. Check terminal connections on starter motor. If the starter is temperamental it will do the same again.

starter motors can be repaired.

Fiat Panda.
Fiat Scudo (with speedblock, pipe carrier, reversing sensors, reversing camera, tow bar, some new rust and Fake Plumber logo)

started out with nothing, still have most of it left.

Hi Thanks for your reply
I did check the terminals on the starter motor and main negative terminal on the gearbox before buying a new battery. Hopefully it was a one off .

After seeing a post about a starter motor loosing a magnet , I'm going to pull mine just to check, So fairing off again to disconnect the battery :(
It might be the culprit of slow turning over and the total loss of movement.

Well, I bought a refurbished starter motor from Motoworks, fitted it and now the engine spins over faster than it has ever done. :D Job done
