battery maintenance

Postby Stokesy » Sat Oct 22, 2016 4:40 pm

My r1100s arrived on thursday night, had a 20 mile ride today for the first time, can see me taking some time to gel, but Im sure I will.

On previouds bike i have always installed a quick connection for a battery tender, my usage is low during the off season, is this advisable or not nessesary?
Battery is not the easiest to get to :)

hard wire a flying lead to the battery terminating just uner the seat area with a suitable female connector. Wire your battery tender with a suitable male connector and then just plug it in. Worked for me, I always kept the bike on charge and the original battery lasted 11 years before letting me down on a trip to Ireland.

Get an Optimate ( or similar ) battery conditioner with a DIN plug and just stick it into your 12v auxillary socket, job done.
Search around ( ebay / Motorworks ) they're pretty easy to find ones designed for Beemers.

I always used an Optimate until about 4 years ago when I bought an Oxford solar charger. The Optimate lives in a drawer now and the solar charger is always on the bike (R1200S) when it's at home.

(Famous last words) the battery's been fine - it was in the bike when I got it 5 years ago and obviously wasn't a new battery then.
