53.500mls on a 99plate - Original clutch on minemarkw wrote:Hi all,
I,ve had my 1999 1100s 2 years and really love it. so far I have put over 50K on it taking it up to 75k. Im interested to know whats likely to wear out as the the miles go on ( Currently do 2500 miles / month all year).
I do all my own servicing, and have made sure everythings been done on time, with regular oil & filter changes. I have already done paralever bearings, bevel box bearings/seals & throttle bodies.
How long does the clutch last ? any known engine problems ... any info or experiences greatly appreciated.

When we parted company mine had done 65k on original clutch/ Gearbox, front and rear suspension units all still good - It did have to have the input bearing to the Bevel box replaced at about 50k miles and I had to get that done at a proper workshop as it needs a press. other than that it had the same sort of self service schedule described above and I did the Paralever bearings twice at 22k and 44k. Fuel filter at 24k and 48k Alternator belt at 36k - But it was still pulling like a train and no Throttle body rattles. So all in all service them regular and they seem to be bullet proof.
There would appear to be a surfeit of prolixity and sesquipedalian content today please do not use a big word when a singularly un-loquacious and diminutive linguistic expression will satisfactorily accomplish the contemporary necessity

Kin ell, some of these mileages are savage
. Seems if the lubrication regime is good then things go on and on. I love the thrift with wilko synthetic
Quality.

Fiat Panda.
Fiat Scudo (with speedblock, pipe carrier, reversing sensors, reversing camera, tow bar, some new rust and Fake Plumber logo)
started out with nothing, still have most of it left.

There's a Boxercup prep local here that has 150,000 kms, paralever bearings replaced at 110,000, runs cheapest oil available, mostly long trips laden 2 up..never an issue!

111,000 mile Rockster.
(these are from memory - I can probably look it up if needed).
Major issues:
Clutch slave cylinder and spring at about 70k (weird issue - the clutch pushrod managed to friction-weld itself to the spring plate and so the clutch slave cylinder bearing wore out).
Starter motor at about 80k
Paralever bearings at about 90K
Front Wheel bearings at about 60K
Final Drive Crown wheel bearing and gearbox main bearings were done at about 60K IIRC.
I HAVE had the dreaded clutch spline failure, but can't remember if it was on this bike, or the previous one.
Had a rear shock leak a long time ago - but it was replaced by BMW fairly instantly.
I've swapped the brake calipers more times than I care to mention (friggin Tokicos), but currently running a pair of Brembos and (thus far) am far happier).
It gets a full service every 12k and a minor (engine oil) every 6K. I tend to stick to Castrol 10W40 mineral (Actevo) if I can.
It'll still pull an indicated 135 (on private roads, natch), if I wind it right up.

How long will it last
Well mine has 125,000 on the clock. I bought it with 7k.
What has gone wrong? At 50k the gearbox input shaft seal failed - new seal and clutch required. At 80k the clutch fell apart which turned out to be due to the gearbox output shaft wearing. Replacement gearbox needed too. At 102k it would not start one day. I failed to work out what was wrong apart from low compression on the right. Because the gearbox was noisy too - the previous one had clearly not been a good one - I acquired an engine with 27k on and that went to.
I have taken the head off the old engine and all looks to be ok apart from some carbon under the valve lip.
At 117k the front universal joint on the shaft failed - have to admit there had been some play there but I left it too late. Replacing that with a second-hand one was not too painful.
