Turbocharged R1100S ?????
Has anyone hereabouts turbo'd an R1100S ?
I'm more at home with mechanical superchargers, but that would be totally impractical [ packaging ] for the R1100S.
All thoughts appreciated.

Mettise and RB racing are the ".two which spring to mind. Although RB racing never seemed to be able to produce anything to buy. I would say mettise are the ones to follow turbo wise. Built some good bikes.
Supercharging. Only one I know who has attempted it and that was San Jose bmw in the USA. There was a build page on their website or try a search on pelican. I don't think it was ever finished though, as I don't recall any ride reports. Supercharger sat on top of engine in place of alternator and was driven by the alternator belt. Don't know how you would then get power for the electrical system. Total loss I would imagine as trying to locate another alternator would be a nightmare.
Turbo seems the easiest way to go . Although I don't know how reliable the the engines are . I can see heat being the biggest problem yet again .

Not much info on the turbo installation, and it's not a R1100, but an HP2.
Most custom built showroom/trailer queen bikes don't work very well, but this one seems to be an exception to that rule.

I've pretty well ruled out mechanical superchargers - mainly from the aforementioned packaging problems.
Turbo is the sensible way to go. I have a lot of experience with forced induction in the past 50 years, from 1000cc 4 cylinder road and race cars to blown injected V8's.
I'm still learning about turbos, but the basics are the same in either case.
Here's one of our old playthings - 7.2 second / 184 mph quarters. 1500 bhp on metahnol [ in 1973 ]

Looks definitely like Turbo .... just dropped on an Australian company that make Turbos and will sort out a ballpark AR and turbine housing kit.
We just bought a 1200 to use as the donor for this project.
However, the idea is to have the kit able to retro fit on the "Scream" Cafe Racers.

That's a nice bit of work Mitch.
Unfortunately the packaging on the R1100S [ and other Oilheads ] presents a few more obstacles for us.
I'm currently looking at the space underneath the gearbox, it will mean an additional oil return scavenge pump - but they're readily available and inexpensive. On the positive side we will be able to use a shorter exhuast [ to turbo ] than with the example shown.
However, the "New" project [ for next year ] will be a different styling and may offer us some alternatives, but we're pretty well stuck with plan A for the "Scream" and derivitives.

While we were signing off a few changes to the "Scream" at the weekend, we put one of the mules onto the lift to check out the viability of our thoughts re: turbo packaging.
yes - the turbo will fit quite neatly under the gearbox [ centre stand removed - if you have one ! ] and the various routings for manifolding, scavenge oil pump, intercooler etc. all look feasible.
I used one of my old IHI turbos [ twin turbo Alfa Sud engine ] for the mock up - so now we just need to work out some math for the turbine /AR / Housing etc. to get somwhere near the ballpark.
We also kicked around some ideas for a styling direction for the next project.
Nothing set in stone, but I'm sure there will be a lightbulb moment.

Gus that would be appreciated - I'm a firm believer in -"if you don't know [ not sure ] - find out" !!
I've been involved with forced induction for over 50 years [ race and road ], but my Turbo experience [ and blow through ] is very limited.
This project WILL be happening, I'm collecting the R1200 on Thursday and I'm looking at turbo specs as we speak.
I know from conversations with CC and others that you get relatively small BHP gains for lots of money with an Oilhead ! Turbo will change all that.
The folks over at TFI [ chips ] in the US have been very helpful in developing a new package for us, and have agreed to come on board with the Turbo project ................"the Oilhead is dead, long live the Oilhead" !!!!
