looking at the K n N RU1180 it has an oval cross section.
Does anyone know off hand what the maximum diameter and height would be to squeeze a circular filter in?

The filter requires to have a base plate (oval and round) - i.e - it is not an open-ended "tube" - but a "cup" ?
So - squashing a round filter will deform the baseplate and make it difficult to seal at the top of the filter in the plenum inlet?
I think it is sufficiently difficult to get a long-term seal at the top (due to the penetrative nature of the oil) without additional problems on alignment and stored energy in the filter.
I'd go for the oval one - every time.
Looking at the plenum without the filter-holder - it doesn't look like cobbling a round filter - would gain much, to be honest.

Heavy breathing
Using the VS pattern, gives a massive increase in filter area that really changes the way the bike breathes.

I was amazed at how small the original, and the K&N direct replacements were. The one minor downside to the VS is that the full-depth filter prevents pushing the intake tubes back inside the airbox (to gt the tyhrottle bodies off) - but how often do we need to do that eh?
So worry not, I have used the VS for around 55,000 miles and its great, without seeking a few extra percent area.
Likely this was the best £40 I have spent on this bike.
