Road Tax rip-off

Post by big rob »

Gail has just wasted 10-minutes of her life on the phone to DVLA trying to establish why we are being penalised by the Government/ DVLA over these new ridiculous road tax rules;

We bought a used car from a Trader on 1st November c/w 1-years MOT because of the new rules we had to Tax the car immediately (£156.75) for 6-months (Post office take the V5 and send it to DVLA). Thought it best to have the car serviced by our local garage so we knew everything was tip-top for winter, so left the car with him & walked home. We get a phone call 30-minutes later telling us the car wasn't fit for the road  which came as a surprise as the vehicle had been MOT'd on the day we bought it. Fortunately, the dealer did give us a full refund & he took the car back (after we had it re-MOT'd and it failed)
Anyway, the situation now is; we have paid out £156.75 on Road Tax & will not get a refund until we receive the V5 back from DVLA which they have advised won't be processed until 1st December which means by the time we receive it then send it back to DVLA we're going to loose another months Road Tax as no refunds given for part months.
This is a complete rip-off and we can't believe it is entirely legal!
Beware if you're buying/selling any vehicles from now on cos you too are likely to be robbed by your Government.

Fairly well-known Rob.

For every vehicle sold in a year - the Taxman gets an additional month's Road Fund License.

Just another stealth tax

Take it up with dealer. It is his fault you are out of pocket because he sold you a dodgy car in the first place.

Good luck with that one!!

That is the sucker punch from the deviant who drafted the new legislation, perhaps we should not be too keen to immediately tax a used vehicle? If one has comprehensive insurance on another vehicle and the one you have bought has a valid mot then perhaps it is worth chancing not taxing it straight away?

As DT sez approach the dealer for your losses?

There seems to be a feeling that this was a deliberate ploy to raise more cash. I disagree. I don't think the body that came up with this are that bright.

I think it's your typical ill thought out mess this government seems to conjur up. They start with an idea and completely mess up the implementation, just like they did with child benefit restrictions, benefit changes, bedroom taxes, Scottish referendum / devolution etc.

They couldn't organise the proverbial pi55 up in a brewery.

The really worrying thing is that they are that bright and as above, it's a stealth tax. Another means of getting money off those that usually can't afford it. Keep the underclasses under!! If a politician told me it was raining I'd have to go outside to see if I got wet!

why are you so concerned about 1 month tax, there is a car sales evidently handling dodgey MOT's,, your happy with money back.
big picture is he should be paying for all tax for you and then some, let him claim it back, it's back in his name, his problem.

people like this selling unsafe cars privately is your problem, but a garage, or trader,, i'd be having the trading standards number on speed dial, and see how much he throws at you. then do it anyway.

We have no beef with the Trader who sold then bought back the vehicle in question, he has been very reasonable with us and was as shocked as we were with the massive discrepancies between different MOT testing stations.

The DVLA acknowledge we bought the vehicle (as per their letter above) why can't they just issue the V5 instead of sending the letter above? Is it all just a stalling tactic?
No refunds are given for part months, therefore through no fault of ours we are likely to be 'penalised' for the month of December too.

We have written to DVLA fully explaining the circumstances, will keep you posted on the outcome.

Lastly, are there any qualified MOT testers out there? What are your thoughts on the "schnell-fit-fitters" carrying out MOT's?

MOT test is only a validation on the day it was tested. It also is "a minimum requirement" easy for a testing centre to say" it was ok on the day I tested it" more difficult and expensive to argue it was not.

But Chris, it was tested the day they bought it - Rob, seems like a no win situation for you. Through no fault of yours, it would seem you are going to be stung for the tax - I hope DVLA or whatever they are calling themselves these days are sympathetic to your situation. Be interesting to see the outcome

I had an MOT at Scnell Fit (Citroen C4) and they said it needed new Track rod ends. So I took it to the Dealer (for their opinion) who said it needed a new steering rack - luckily I was 2 days inside warranty so no cost hurrah! However, when all this work was done the problem remained which was actually a lower suspension ball joint which I pointed out to them, they then wanted to charge me £120 which I politely refused to pay pointing out that I could get the spare part from GSF for £30 I eventually paid £30 and the stealer fitted the part. Not been back to the dealer since how greedy & stupid are they?
There would appear to be a surfeit of prolixity and sesquipedalian content today please do not use a big word when a singularly un-loquacious and diminutive linguistic expression will satisfactorily accomplish the contemporary necessity
