blown engine r1200s
Hi all
as some of you may know my engine blew at Brno during the closing stages off my last race. As i could see a hole in the top crankcase i assumed the motor had thrown a rod. It now looks like a big failure on the RHS. Could have been a valve or piston failure. Hard to tell as everything on that side is destroyed. Looks like a piece of piston or valve has got wedged between the crank and crankcase causing it to fracture and break the top engine case. i thought i had stopped the engine pretty quick. a lot of damage can be caused in so little time when the motor is at or near max RPM.
cylinder barrel
cylinder head
what left of the piston /valves found in exhaust and cylinder
hole in top of engine case
i have not stripped the left side yet . will tomorrow. although i think that side is ok head and piston wise.
all the best

Hi all
Yes , it's a proper mess!!
Luckily it happened on a straight , so it wasn't too scary. Unlike the bill for a new engine!
I doubt I will be able to attend my next round in Hungary , which is in September.
Monies earmarked for van hire, new tyres and travel/running expenses will be ploughed into a new engine with a few nice bits thrown in.
I will focus on next year now.
All the best

looks like exactly the same failure i had had, on my 12s a few years ago. Went at a ton whilst accelerating hard and spewed oil all over the place. RHS again and a hole through the top of the block.
Pillion wasnt best pleased
Good luck mate

Are there many options out there for road going 1200s motor tuning?
Hi Paul
Depends on how far you want to go with it (or how deep are your pockets). For the road I found a full decent exhaust system, piper x air filter and a decent fuel controller (rapid box / power commander ) or a ecu map reflash(rexer) was enough to make the bike nice to ride and quick enough.
Lighter pistons and rods will give good engine response and also give the big ends a easier time if your exploring the upper rev range a lot. There is more that can be done but you then need to change a lot of other things to make the bike reliable. These mods would only be viable if your racing and need a more powerful bike to better your times.
