R1100s lowering the rear footpegs for pillion comfort

Postby The Teutonic Tangerine » Fri Jan 18, 2013 2:49 pm

I thought I'd post this again in case anyone was considering how to do this as a winter project.

I used 6mm ally plate sprayed with Hammerite silver. Accurate marking out and drilling ensured a perfect fit

The results are in.

That is so 8) . Good job 3T. Practical, Neat, Tidy and a problem solved. A man after my own heart. It's deeply satisfying to be able to tailor a bike to your own requirements. Even more so when you can engineer it so that it can be returned to 'standard' at any time (as you've managed here) and no harm done. Niiiiice

Mr. Spock is my role model so be advised; I possess no (discernible) sense of humour.

It's all VFR (DCT) round here now. STILL missing my 1100s tho.

I might be able to knock up some of those, plenty of ally plate at work and the guys in the fabrication shop are a bit underworked at the present time.
Is a 25mm drop enough to make that much difference? my wife does not go on the back that often but she has never mentioned being uncomfortable.

Sue has never been on the back with luggage fitted, I have soft throwovers so may sit different to hard boxes, better have a trial run before the wales w/end.

Ditto, Just realised my other half has never been on the S, just a tailpack!
So, if someone were to offer the lowering kit I would buy in so she has the option :)

I will have a word with the guys at work next week, roughly how many sets are we looking at and is 25mm enough of a drop? they will just be ally plate and any painting will need to be done by "you".

I'd be interested too, Sam struggles with the panniers on and it would help with getting on and off too.

My Missus is about 5ft 7in tall and found that the 25mm drop enough to ease the pressure on the back of the knees. ie teh knee is not bent at such a tight angle. I would not go more than 25 mm because you are increasing the leveage on the "welded to the sub-frame bracket" where the footrest bolt onto(not so much when sitting down but when getting on and off).

I put up the plans so that anyone could have ago at making them so fill your boots chaps.

I have acquired the material to manufacture 5 sets(+ a set for me course)of these plates, it is 6mm ally plate, we also have 8mm plated cap head Allen screws or stainless steel bolts plus nuts and washers if required or if preferred I can countersink them as per the drawings.
If the 4 that have already asked for a set pm me as to how you want them drilled and your details and I will get back to you.
After reading TTT`s second post I will stick to a 25mm drop unless asked for anything different.

Presumably that doesn't work with OE panniers that align to the footpeg?
