Hi All
I've been the proud owner of a Mamola Boxer Cup for 7 years and have been listening in here on and off for most of this time but never got round to introducing myself!
On my way home on Friday I had a driver pull out on me and took the front off the car. Luckily, I managed to stay upright and the bike is still rideable but it does have damage to the carbon head cover, footpegs, rear wheel and subframe. The bike is not in the best condition as it's my daily commute but the Staintune pipe and fairly new rear Wilbers may be of interest to people here, if it's written off.
Has anyone had experience thay can share on how to ensure it does not get sent to a breakers before I have the chance to take the parts off?
I'm hoping it does not come to this as I really love the all round ability of this bike and would not know what to replace it with.
Cheers
Ian
Hi and some advice please

Tough break Ian,
First thing - did you declare the Staintune and Wilbers?
If not - you might want to get to them off smartish, anyway (assuming you have the original bits).
If you did declare them, it was probably on a "return to standard" in event of a claim - in which case the advice is the same - swap back.
You've probably got the best part of £800-£900 worth of parts there (on open market) - so they are worth having (moreso - if you bought another R1100s).

If I am ever on life support - Unplug me......
Then plug me back in..........
See if that works .....

To be totally honest it sound's like you like the bike keeping it for seven years proves that also fitting the staintune pipe and wilbers
My advice would be to talk to your insurance company about doing a buy back you should be able to buy the bike back for between 10 and 25% of it's insurance value if they class it a catogary D write off you should still be able to insure it full comp after repair if they say cat C you should be able to insure it TPF&T or TPO
You mention the subframe being damaged check this very carefully the mountings will probably be cracked and will need repair by a competent ally welder[bitch of a job but can be done] the rear wheel can be replaced or posibly refurbed
There's a lot of info on the net about buying back from insurance company's most seems to come from the USA but is still relavant
You never know you may well come out with your bike back on the road with all the work done you wanted to do to it and still have £ notes in your bulging pockets
I have just asked on my other forum if anyone has any advice or tips for buying back
Hope this helps Dai

Sorry to hear about your accident Ian.
Hope you are able to get it back on the road. Hate to see a BCR pulled apart.
Sounds insignificant but one piece that I could send you (free!) is a left carbon cylinder cover, if that is the side you need.
Just let me know.......
Best of luck with your bike.

I did not declare these part on the insurance and do have the standard exhaust but not the shock. I've just had the clutch changed at Jap and German so I assume the exhaust and shock must have been removed at the time and should come off without too much of a fight. Maybe I should get a rear shock off ebay and get them swapped just in case.
I'll probably start by talking to the insurance company before they collect the bike to tell them I'd be interested in a buy back if it's declared a cat-d. I've heard stories of the bike being sold on before any offer of a payout has been accepted and want to avoid this.
It's the subframe lugs I’m most concerned about. There is no obvious sign of damage but i don't fancy one snapping on me. The damage to the subframe is limited to the rear footpeg being twisted inwards and bending the lugs and attaching bolts, the impact was <20mph. I would be interested if anyone else has seen similar damage and if the lugs were ok or not. I'll try and post some pics later

Sounds like mine was in a far worse state than yours the subframe is still about an inch probably more out of line but what the hell it's solid so will do me [well it was hanging off] also i had to replace the left barrel, piston, rod, head, throttle body, tough old bikes these! apparently it was a cat d in it's early life and would have been a cat a or b if it had been recorded when it came into my mates hands as a project,[he had the subframe welded on and had alread got some bit's together for the repairs] it's not pretty but would clean up i'm running it as a rat as i would sooner ride it than pollish it
The subframe mounting lugs will need carefull looking at they are a weak point they seem to snap with a slight twist
The pillion footrest i'm suprised the footrest bracket didn't snap but looking at mine it looks like they will easily straighten take off ally bracket[these look bent from the factory] try cold bending the subframe footrest mounting plate back into shape' a pair of mole grips or stilson will be your friend here if it starts to crack get the grinder out cut the plate off use a big hammer to straighten and weld them back on
I know some of you will cringe at me advice here but if you take your time and use your head all will be good
Almost lunchtime the suns shining i'm off out soon Dai

hi Duggers
Sorry to hear of your `incident`, at least your ok..
I have a mate who got hit by a taxi, he was not hurt thank god but the bike had panel damage, ( 98 thundercat ) enough to deem it, `beyond economical repair` by the insurance guys.
Upshot is he got paid out for the Yam, ( reasonable amount for the year of bike too) and was able to buy it back for repair after the claim was sorted, so basically after a bit of basic ( and cheap) repair work his bike cost him the princely sum of £200 ( the pay out paid for repair and his next project, the Yam still runs just fine)
you have to be pretty forcefull over your claim to buy back, insist after apraisal that its yours to repair etc, most insurance companies will go with this, it is after all the easiest option for them.
good luck
Steve

Cut and pasted from other forum
mate bought his back of the insurance company. they valued the bike for his claim and then stated the amount they would accept for the buy back, was last year for a 2007 cg 125 with 13k on clock. buy back was £57.
they just knocked it off his payout.
their assesors basiclly say its worth £xxxxx and if you agree pay it if not haggle. and see if you can get to an amount that you both agree on and accept.
they got to his vaue as they basically said it was scrap. so its weigh in value was £57.
he had spare forks, wheel and bits in the shed so put it back on the road for less that £100,
you have to declare it on your insurance though and some wont insure them and some need an inspection before getting back on road.. so cannot go back on road can can only be used for parts,
Good luck Dai

I wrote my original R1100s off last November after a very low speed tumble. The insurance paid out almost straight away and after negotiating with the assessor I bought it back as scrap for 10% of the payout. I've now got it under a cover in the back garden and am gradually stripping bits off it for my identical replacement bike.
