Re: subframe lugs
Never experienced this myself but I think they are a bit susceptable in a tumble.northern donkey wrote:has anyone had there lugs snap on the back of the main sub frame on there r11s, i was out for the weekend and noticed the back end go soft got off the bike had a look and and the lugs at the top where the 2 frames meet had completely snapped, PLEASE CHECK YOURS REGULAR, can i just point out i am only 11 1/2 stone so weight should not be a issue
Seems unusual for them both to snap at the same time so maybe one was already broken. Has the bike been over at all?
Think its just a case of having them welded back on.

I'll be surprised if the failure is on a previously undamaged frame (unless you have owned the bike from new)
I'd shy away from getting new lugs (or existing lugs) welded on unless you have access to a machine shop with suitable resources (personnel and machinery) and you get QA pack.
But - it's not my risk to take.

Mine were snapped but my bike had been down hard enough to take the left pot off and snap the left bar weight! so i would look very closely for any sign of previous repair any reasonable welder should be able to do the repair
They are all old bikes were running and most will have been down hard at sometime in their lives some will show their history and some not
try not to worry about it and have fun out there Dai

Mike.
I have seen many bikes that look perfect[at first glance] but when you look closer they are lethal, not all that shines is gold. You may or may not be able to polish a turd but you can polish a bike in a dangerous condition
Check those lugs look behind too any sign of paint flaking or lifting near a weld is a sign of movement and needs close inspection
All i'm trying to say is instead of polishing your bike get the pannels off and check it over [it will take about the same time]
Keep safe all Dai

Nasty!!!!!!!!!
Another of my pet hates is that you can go and buy a welder today and put together trailers, frames, do chassis repairs etc with no idea of what you are doing i have recently bought a small inverter welder and it is to easy to get a good looking weld with no penetration[oo er mrs's] also the same with a mig [if you know what you are doing they are a great thing to have in the workshop]
I learnt with a big old stik welder if it looked good it was if it looked bad it was
It was comon practice in the dim and distant past to be given scrap to play with when you could join together different thickness of steel you would be told to write your name in weld on ever decresing thickness steel only when you could do this would you be let loose on gate hinges etc [never near a vehicle]
Edit i dont consider myself to be a good welder i dont do enough to feel confident to do welding on other peoples vehicles i will do my own but draw the line there, i still get that strange feeling [when on the motorway on the trike or bike with Ann on the back] how good is my welding?
I was tought by a coded welder many years ago but that doubt is always with me
A forghtnight ago i was parked up at the story arms [the welsh lads will know where i meen] a girl pulled up on a yam fazer 600 when she went to put the sidestand down when the lug dropped off as soon as she touched it i did the gentlemanly thing and picked it up and put the stand down for her
even the factory can get it wrong now and again dai

Interesting............
The added gusset, unless assured that there was no inclusion at the back of the weldment - could introduce a stress-raiser to the assembly. Better off without that, I think.
If it was my frame, with broken lugs - I'd get the following done:
New lugs fabricated, from suitable Aluminium alloy (fabshop to advise)
Prepped for full-pen welds
TIG-welded by a professional.
NDT carried out (UT or EC)
Load tested
NDT carried out again.
I'd get a workpack from the fabshop too.
If that proves to be too expensive - get a replacement frame.
To me - The consequences of a crap weld letting-go, with the bike fully laden with pillion and luggage - is a great incentive.

I would be happy for any COMPOTENT welder to do a repair, There are WELDERS and there are people who think they can weld!!! (OK I'll get down from my high horse now and forget about welding until Monday morning)
Peter.

i have had it welded properly by a very compotent welder alloy welding is black magic art form, the welder said it has not been touched before there was a lot of bubbles in the original welds, there is no sign of previous acciedent with the bike i know they must of gone together because the first thing i noticed was the plastic not matching on both sides and i would of noticed it before if one side had gone and then the other i only had oxford throw over bags on the back and a 3 man tent so less weight than a pillion, luckly the wireing loom and the 2 bottom lugs held the back end together
