Paralever arm or Ride-Height adjuster on the shock?

Post by RiceBurner »

I seem to remember reading somewhere of an issue with using an adjustable Paralever arm, and that using a proper ride-height adjuster on the shock (ie making the shock longer/shorter) was preferable because it didn't damage the prop-shaft or UJ's.

Anyone else know anything about this???

(tempted by Grom's adjustable arm and what to know all the details. ;) )

I can speak from personal experience......I ran my bike with an adjustable arm.The back was up well high and over the course of a few thousand miles the splined sections on the driveshaft gave out.
If I had an option I'd go for the height adjustable shock.

I'm not saying there isn't a problem (I don't know enough about it) but I've run a short para arm (365mm) for the last 15k miles without any problems. I've also got the back jacked up with a longer shock at 320mm.

The S sport is also fitted with the 365mm para arm so it can't be a big enough problem to worry BM.

I'd say that as long as you don't go any less than 365mm you shouldn't have too much trouble... just don't come crying to me when it fails :D

I know Bailey had problems with his,but i use a Verholen ajustable arm with an Ohlin that doesn't have a ride hieght ajuster, and mine feels fine, but then i haven't done the mileage that Baileys done.

Strange thing was i used to have trouble when i ran an old style sport shock(318) and a standard front, have the same set up(ride hieght)with the Verholen and Ohlin and it's fine.

I've had the adjustable on for a long time too with no UJ/Shaft problems to date over a good few miles. Like Adam says, the BCRs and sports run it like that anyway.

ok - so as long as you don't shorten it and less than 365 you're ok??

hmmm, ok. Anyone know where I can get the standard length of the Paralever arm for BM's online?? (I haven't got a tape measure here....) Mine's a Rockster - but I guess no-one here will know the length....

If it's the same as the standard S it's 385mm

I'd imagine it'd be closer to the standard R1150R tbh....
