Taller Screens

Post by Ade B »

Anyone recommend one for touring - nothing silly (no laminar lips or 10ft long ski jump jobbies as per Pelican Parts) just something to flick the wind over my lid so I can hear my music :)

Cheers,

Hi Ade

Mate don't even go there!!!!,i've always found tall screens just take the problem somewhere else, when i bought my S,it came with two BM screens, put the high one on,in certain situations it was better than the standard one but in others was an absolute nightmare,so much that i took it off straight away, the only reason i didn't chuck it in the bin,was that i guess if i ever come to sell the bike,it'll look good haveing both!!!.

screens

Ade ,

I also tried the BM tall screen (with standard low bars) and found it caused awful turbulence . The blade slopes backwards at a very steep angle and throws all the displaced air back at the rider at visor height.
Interestingly enough I tried sitting more upright with arms straight
in an aproximation of the high bar position and found a pocket of absolutely still and quiet air . Unfortunately this was'nt a comfortable position to maintain with low bars . I'm currently trying an MRA sports screen which maintains the profie of the standard BM low screen but has an upturned lip along the top edge . They also do a taller Vario touring screen with an adjustable top half but I wouldn't like to trust all that air pressure on the flimsy mounting points .

Your right about the pocket of still air,i've always used high bars and with the high screen thats exactlt what i got,the problem comes when it's windy,it's just like someone's trying to rip your head off, when trying mine when we got home my other half thought i was mucking about wobbling my head about!!!,i only wish!!!.

mmm - it seems that there is no easy solution then apart from turning the S into a Pan or such like...

I guess it depends on height and seating position of rider as well - I find that I get a lot of turbulence off the stock screen with low bars - not a problem for normal riding but when touring with the autocom on I can't hear music over 80 unless I take out my earplugs.. (if I leave em in and then turn the volume up it deafens my wife!).

Have a noisy Arai which probably makes the problem worse with those pesky side pods.

Bobbit how is the MRA screen?

Taller screen

Post by bobbit »

Ade ,
I was using an Arai lid when I first had the bike with the standard low screen .I'm 6'2" and do a lot of motorway work and the screen left my shoulders out in the breeze and the wind was coming up inside the helmet . I switched to a BMW sportintergral lid and made to measure earplugs which was a great improvement although still not as quiet as I'd hoped .Hence the disastrous experiment with the high screen .

As far as the MRA is concerned theres a lot less turbulence and noise than the tallscreen and marginally more shoulder protection than the low screen. The material used is a lot thinner and more flexible than standard so whether it will be as prone to cracking around the mounting points only time will tell .

Like you said a lots down to the size of rider and prefered riding position .
I had a Boxter out on loan and thought that its negligible screen would cause me problems on the motorway but there was no turbulence to talk of at all ! The posts about screens , low bars and quiet helmets are all inter-related and unfortunately theres no easy answer .

Has anyone tried the Skidmarx "flip" screen (is that similar to the MRA?) and if so, what's it like?
