petrol capacity

Post by yetanotherbm »

:D Hi all. On my 99'S, I notice that when I fill her up she's fine until I close the fuel cap, then I lose some petrol through the overflow pipe, even though the petrol is below the lower neck. Anyone any clues?
Thanx Ian

Petrol is a very volatile substance and the amount of space it takes up depends on its temperature so from cold tank underground to warm bike tank with added heat source and enclosed fairing to retain convection equals expansion of liquid. QED.

Always fill the tank when its cold and ride off somewhere before it starts to expand that way you get to use the few cc’s lost down the overflow.
Mine always drips a bit if filled to the brim and then parked either on the side or centre stand but I don’t tend to notice if I am riding.
Ride safely
Bern.
