I expect this will be regarded as a silly question
I have a TomTom 720 (with full European mapping) that we use in our cars.
Is it feasible to use this on a bike? I realise that it is not waterproofed as the specialist bike ones are, but lets assume I only use it in dry weather, is there any impediment to using the 720?
Is it necessary to use a special bracket or do people just use the suction devices as on cars?
Supplementary question: I have bought a R1100SS and am wondering if there is any way of taking a power supply from the bike for things like charging the satnav or a phone. This is my first bike so I am completely ignorant (as you will have gathered already!).
Hi Adrian - I have used a Garmin i3 on my bike a few times. The first was an experiement with the suction mount on the rev counter face. It worked perfectly for about half an hour... then ejected itself onto the road in Parliament Square. Fortunately I was going slow, and the unit is pretty tough. The second experiment involved gaffer-taping the suction mount to the yoke (over the BMW logo near the ignition key). This was an excellent solution. As it happens I was just coming onto the M4 (and heading for M25 / A1 towards Peterborough) when it started absolutely hammering down with rain. I had 2 choices - either stuff the GPS down my coat or keep going. Some experimentation showed that as long as I kept my speed in the 80mph+ range my high screen kept it dry. Fun in the rain, but when the hail started my smile dropped a little.
I too have a Garmin i3 which would just about work stuffed in the tank bag plastic map wallet. It involved a bit of head movement to look at and was hopeless in bright sunlight.
