Fitting Carbon Yoke Protector

Evening lads
Sorry if this sounds a bit basic but I'm a complete numpty when it comes to technical stuff but I received my Fibre-Lyte yoke protector today and am having trouble fitting it as I have higher bars that are fitted above the top yoke and therefore the protector will not just slot straight onto the yoke.
It looks like I'm gonna have to get the bars off to get it on, I undid the handlebar clamps and after unscrewing the 2 plastic protectors that covet the top of the forks I couldn't get at the two nuts that became visible after unscrewing the prectors. My sockets weren't long enough to get to them.
Do I need a special tool to get at the nuts or am I doing something wrong to get the handlebars off...............I guess I should have bought a Yoke protector that just sticks on around the handlebar housing but wanted a genuine bit of Carbon Fibre which I paid £22 for the privelige.
As I said, I'm sorry if this is basic but any advice would be appreciated.
Cheers
