Hi - have read through some of your forum pages and already picked up on some good ideas and thoughts. I have just bought a 06 R1200S and love it to bits. Never owned a Beemer before but wish I'd done it years ago!
I have a couple of questions if anyone can help - looking for some tail pack type storage for the bike and wondered if anybody had knowlwdge of a suitable manufacturer? Have tried all the usual but I'm still looking for the right piece of kit! Also my exhausts are tarnished, and wondered if anyone knows of a product to bring them back to life? Its not the discolouration that bothers me its the patchy and blotchy areas that appears to be the result of a laquer? - can anyone help?

BMW do a tailpack suitable for the S, I've not tried it but PB and Stoney have and I'm sure will be along with their thoughts shortly. Cleaning the pipes is likely to involve plenty of elbow grease I'm afraid. If they are really bad fine wet & dry is a good starting spot.

I've tried the BMW tailpack which fitted really well but was a bit too big for my needs and made getting on off the bike tricky. PB has the Ventura system which looks neat. The Kriega tailpack will fit too.

In the end I couldn't get on with the tailpacks as the rear of the bike isso high anyway it just made getting on and off the bike a nightmare. I've gone for a BMW tankbag, panniers and Kriega R25 rucksack as my touring combo.

Re the pipes.....I'd ditch and replace them with decent Akro ones that stay mint with a bit of cleaning here and there. The MCN test R1200s highlighted the tarnisha nd rust prone BM exhausts as yet another weak spot on the modern BM bikes.

I have looked for a unobtrusive tail pack for my r1200s without much success. The seat isn't easy to fit something to without scratching the seat unit paint.

For luggage I went for the Ventura kit in the end. Pricey but it is the one and only solution needed for luggage.

The exhaust front pipes are pants. Rear pipe is stainless - front pipe is chromed by the looks of it but so thin any problems burn the chrome.

Fit a full system for best results...

I use a £20 Motrax deluxe helmet bag http://www.motrax.co.uk/index.php?page_ ... ct_id=1175 as a tail pack, it's big enough for a weekend away and fits quite well on the rear seat pad, it has integral bungees which zip away into the base when not in use, and I have two wunderlich tie down loops http://www.nippynormans.com/prodinfo.as ... 6&mitem=81 fastened to the number plate carrier bolts, very useful and discreet when not in use. I also bought a pack of 4 mountain bike handlebar foam grips from halfords for a £5, and pushed them over the bungees to protect the paintwork. all in all a very cheap but usefull alternative to the bmw tail pack.

I've just spotted that Wunderlich now do a tailpack specifically for the R1200S - not big by any means but enough to put a few day essentials like camera and brew kit in.
