heated grips

one of my heated grips failed after 14 months and suspect it could be the wiring. How far into the works do I have to go to find where they are connected to whatever they are connected too? I assume its fairing off/tank up?

Tripe,

Was it the left hand grip that failed? They all do that sir, eventually. You will ned a new grip from your friendly BMW dealer and it's a simple job to fit. It connects into a wiring block under the front of the petrol tank.

It was indeed the left hand one that failed. I only replaced it just over a year ago, do they really go that quickly and why is it that the left prone to failure?

the corrosion is far worse on the LHS of the engine than the RHS on my S

It has gone (left hand heat that is).

Is this something that a 2nd from Motorworks can sort, or does it need to be new (or not have the wiring/connector screwed, etc)?

Water & side stand...have just spent many many rewarding hours dismantling my wiring loom to trace a bad wire (12v from fuse 3 to the clock) - ended up at a cluster of joined-together wires in the bottom of the LH relay box. All green & rotting at the crimps. The relay box has 2 (drain?) holes in the bottom cover. Unfortunately, when the bike is on its sidestand, the drain holes are uppermost & the relay box can still hold enough water for the crimps to paddle in (which can get in through the 'drain' holes!)

Those clever chaps at Jap and German piped some silicon into the hole where the wire comes out of the clip on so when the bike is on its sidestand the water doesn't get in.

I wouldn't waste my time on a secondhand one as the wiring is quite fragile.

How much are OEM replacement Heated grips generally (each).

The reason I ask is I have a pair of aftermarket heated grips I took of my last bike that I'd like to have added to my BoxerCup.

I've fitted the electrics really neatly, but then went to fit the grips at the weekend and have only jus realised the throttle grip won't fit, bcause of BMW's throttle/grip arrangement.

My plan now is to fit a pair of BMW Heated grips to my aftermarket electrics - any advice on achieving this.

Also I've noticed that Oxford make a set of aftermarket heated grips that seem to fit BMWs - what model and type of these has anyone had experience of.

Finally are grips that are listed to fit 1200GS compatible with the R1100s - ie are the bars and throttle the same on both bikes?

Hi Matt,

if memory serves me, the R1100S heated grips are in the region of £65 per side, so £130-ish the pair. If your bike does not have the heated grips switch on the right hand handlebar, that would be an expensive bit to replace, I'm guessing. There are also some other bits of connector and stuff under the plastics to plug into the fuse box.

Here's a handy thread showing how I fitted heated grips to my old bike. I was lucky enough to have the right hand switch gear in place on my bike after the previous owner dropped it and replaced the right hand handlebar gubbins with some second hand bits from motorworks.

I think a couple of folks on here have successfully fitted the Oxford products hot hands grips to their bikes. Mic Mac springs to mind as someone who has done that.

They break due to people pulling on the grip when putting bike on the stand (if centre stand is fitted).

Clutch side also has more grip wear, normally. Mine cracked and went all manky as the grip wore, so I lock wired it together and filled in the cracks with superglue. A year later and it's fine. Still gets hot, and I think the lockwire is staving off any more wear....
