Fuel Injectors

My s is a 99 model with 52K up and I'm noticing the performance going off a little. Doing the valves, air filter and throttle linkages is not making the usual improvement and I believe the fuel injectors may need cleaning. You can buy carb cleaner in Halfords but I don't know if this is totally effective in getting rid of all the fuel gum and glazing.

Has anyone carried out this operation and how did you clean the injectors ? Was there a big difference in performance once this was carried out ? New ones from BMW are about £90 each which is a joke.

As well as petrol additives to clean them I think you can get them cleaned ultrasonically.

Try these guys to see if they can advise or source new ones cheaper.

You can even get your Mobilube 1 SHC from them (I did!).

OK, they may appear to be car specialists but they are a Bosch service centre and advertise Motronic diagnosis on their front.

Thanks ME-109. I gave them a call just a minute ago and they can ultrasonically clean them for £25 the pair + Vat which sounds ok. I'm going to find out from the manual exactly what type of injectors BMW use as this firm can probably get replacements for them at a much lower cost than BMW.

I've been looking through a few web sites on the issue and some of them recommend getting injectors cleaned every 25K. They are critical to a bikes performance. The fuel flow rate needs to be matched and they have to produce similar spray patterns to work properly. The bike has been a bit sluggish for quite a time now so I think a professional clean is in order.

I would be interested to know the cost (and model number) of their matched replacement pair. If it's not too far above £25 + vat, I might go for them.
I described under another heading how my bike is now running rich after a thorough fuel system clean up, including a new filter, subsequent to water getting into the fuel. New injectors, then a revisit to the Dyno centre to remap the PC.

Scotty, it might have been under someone elses heading; but to summarise it was as I said. The misfiring and inability to rev past about 4k was agony. The strip down showed water in the tank. Water wet fuel filters restict fuel getting through. I am not sure how the water got in, but I did two outings of several hundred miles each in the rain in the last year, but I think I picked up some contaminated fuel that finally caused the problem. Now that the fuel system is better, it's letting more through and running rich up to 4K.
