Another noise question

Postby gismo » Sun Oct 21, 2007 8:36 am

Hi
Following turnipbmw's comment on noise.

My 2000 1100s has a slight droning vibration only in 4th gear most noticeable at 60mph.

I've been told by a BMW mechanic that this is quite normal with this model. It's done 16,000 miles and has been like it since I bought it with 2,000 on the clock;

Any thoughts or comments would be appreciated

i'd guess the drive shaft is out of phase. BMW mechanics will deny this is an issue but it made adifference on my bike. Opinion is generally split. try a search under 'phasing'

I'm in the 'doesn't make a difference' camp as I must have had the back end off 20 times and it's gone on randomly every time with no real difference. I had the back end off my GS however and the shaft has one 'double spline' that means it will only go on one way. The top and bottom UJs are not in line however as you might expect, but say one or two splines off being in-line. I guess that must be done for a reason.
