Optimate & canbus???

Post by Boxered »

Can anyone tell me if there is a problem using an optimate II with the canbus system on my 1200s?
the user manual for the bike says to disconnect the battery before charging? I have connected the trailing lead direct to the terminals on the battery, but as soon as I power on the optimate, it blows the inline fuse!!
(twice)

Steve,

When I had my K1200R I placed my Optimate 2 leads direct to the terminals and charged it that way without a problem.

I have now fitted the same leads to the 'S' but not used it yet. I will plug it in tomorrow and let you know.

Thanks Andrew, I'm perplexed as to why it blows the fuse :? I'm wary of trying a third fuse in case I'm doing some form of damage to the electrics.

Cheers

Steve

I connected my Optimate to the battery terminals with no apparent problems. But it is a rugged GS rather than a sensitive sports (touring) motocycle.

Cheers

Steve..

Ive got a 1200s and have wired the optimate waterproof socket direct to my battery and it charges fine. I presume you have checked your polarity ??

...no problems over here...
...the 12RT as well as the 12S have the Optimate directly connected to the battery...
Have a nice day !

Thanks chaps, but I've sorted it now. I presume that I blew the original fuse when I took the lead of my 1100s, so I bought a pack of 3 fuses, all of which were either dud or blew as soon as the power was turned on :x
so a new pack of fuses purchased, tested and working perfectly :)

what are the chances of a pack of 3 fuses all being duff????

I dont get on with this new fangled electrickery stuff!

cheers

You should wire the optimate direct to the battery without any inline fuses. That way - if you have to charge the battery with a normal charger - the higher current flow won't blow the fuse.

There really is no reason to fit a fuse.

The thought that all three of a pack of three could be dud is quite alarming

Well it would have been when I was a lot younger
