Fitting an Optimate lead - numpty question

Post by kitkat »

I can hear the groans but......

Bought an Optimate charger an want to install the lead so not removing the battery but what order should I loosen the terminal nuts and connect the wires? And is the alarm likely to go off in the process?

Battery

Hi

I could be mistaken but after refering to my Trusty Haynes it says.

Remove negative first - Then Positive.

When reconnecting Positive First then Negative.

But if your fitting the optimate lead you may only have to Loosen and take off the nut to slide the connection on and the battery will not be disconnected at any point. At least thats what I done with mine.

Hope this helps. Just take your time and don't short out anything!!

Happy New Year

depends what alarm you have, but more than likely it will as it will sense that it has lost it's supply and therefore go off on it's internal battery. One of the reasons I cut my DataTOOL out this xmas, pishing useless pile of excrement

Hein Gericke sell a connector that fits onto the end of your optimate lead and then goes into the power socket, but that assumes you've got a power socket fitted :?:

Thanks for the replies, all done and LED lights flashing away nicely on the charger.

Battery has bolts rather than nuts so ended up disconnecting everything.

I have a DataTool S4 but turned out to be easy by putting it into winter mode before disconnecting the battery and came back fine afterwards.

Bought a nifty little LED cap light from halfords when buying some cable ties. It has three LEDs on a clamp - meant for attaching to a hard safty hat I think but really useful when fiddling around in a poorly lit garage!

Cheers

This is the correct sequence for all negative earthed vehicles. There is always a chance that when removing the pos connector it could contact the frame and the pos terminal. If the neg is already disconnected there will not be a short.
