Front shock

Post by scotty »

I know there has been a great deal of postings re replacing rear shocks etc but I was hoping for some info re servicing the front shock on the bike. I'll need to replace the rear shocker on the bike this year and have no intention of paying the ridiculous money asked by some aftermarket suppliers. I want a rebuildable unit and understand that Hagon might be able to supply one at a half reasonable price. What about the front unit though. Does this actually wear ? What's the proceedure for a full service of the front end suspension parts from changing the oil in the fork legs ?

The factory manual states that the fork oil never needs changing. But that's the same factory manual that omits to state that 2001-on bikes take 490ml of fork oil rather than the 170ml quoted........ The oil's there only for lubrcation, though - it doesn't perform a damping function so doesn't work as hard as in normal forks.

I still swear by my EMC Endurance shock supplied by Tim Rose, I believe there are a couple of other trixsters who have them too. Built for you and rebuildable.

Give him a call

Round about 550 for a front and back set I think

Thats interesting about the oil in the forks sproggy so I'll make a note about that.

Tripe - also noted re the guy who did your shokers. Did you get a front one from him ? The back is about gone at 43K but I'm not sure what life to expect from the front one.

It was front and back for 550 total. 28K and the back was shagged and the front wasn't far behind. Seemed silly not to sort out both ends at the same time.

You can thank Steve W for that - if he hadn't told me yesterday I'd be running the bike for ever with 320ml less oil in each fork than there should be! I wondered why so much came out......

E=MC Endurance shocks highly recommended. The front shock is as important as the rear, especially if you are going for it across rough stuff. Don't buy just one shock for cheapness sake, do it properly and you won't regret it.

Tim just had my EMCs rebuilt with all moving parts replaced. They'd done 50k of hard use. The rear had lost damping, the front was ok but cheaper fix for a pair.
The price was £150 including return to the French factory. When they sent them back I also got the worn out parts and a report of what they found and what parts had been upgraded "as seal and damping technology had moved on".
I think I had a good deal, the only down side is my other winter 1100 feels saggy in comparison.

Chobbler

Is it possible to rebuild these things oneself in a home workshop or do they need sending back to the factory ? Either way they sound the business and far more economical than many other makes.

scotty, I'm told they are gas/oil, so probably pressurised nitrogen. If you did strip one I don't think you would get spares off the shelf even if you could measure the wear on parts for yourself etc.
So I'd just let them do it. You get a new 12 month warranty on refurbs anyway. You bust it, you get a new one :D
