Dropping out of gear??

Do BM gearboxes do this??
I know that my ZXR and the Mirth (550 Zephyr) have a habit of dropping out of top if i'm half-hearted with the change (ie not hooking them in properly), but do BM's do this too??
The Rockster dropped out of top twice last night, and dropped out of 2nd into Neutral this morning. It's quite possible I wasn't as "forthright" when I changed gear each time (wasn't really concentrating each time).
Also - this box seems a lot more notchy than the previous one.
Should I be worried?

Yep it does too... When being lazy with the shift, the gear can drop out, noticed this loads of times...

Mine did it when I first got it and I adjusted the gear lever down a touch so that up changes were more positive without me having to lift my foot so much... if you get my drift.

Dropping out after having been successfully engaged ? Or not quite making it when you release the clutch ?
I've never had the former, but do experience the latter on the way up from 1st to 2nd. Forces me to resynchronise the hand/foot coordination with a more deliberate In/ Change/ Out routine. It's a bit hairy when the shift up is immediately after a Grand Prix start entering the Wandsworth Bridge roundabout - only to find you are in fact in Neutral and not in 2nd. And there's always a great big clunk as you try a second time coz of the mismatched revs.

Yeah, right pain in the arse. Usuall happens when I'm lazy and not thinking. Real pain when pulling away from the lights and it drops out of second into neutral.

Try not using the clutch on up changes, mine seems not to jump out if I use this method but if I use the clutch it will sometimes not engage properly.

The former, just wandering along nice and gently and suddenly THUNK it's like the engine cuts out.
Actually I am beginning to think it might be the engine cutting out briefly rather than it dropping out of gear - I've been riding through a monsoon the last 2 days - can't be good for the electrics.

I had gear selection problems with a new R1100ss 4yrs ago. Took it back to the dealers numerous times ( done less than 2000 miles and only a couple of months old ) they told me I did'nt know how to ride it. It would often go up to 4th gear O.K then would not change up any further....just lots of false neutrals, up and down shifts often would not select.
Then one day it locked up solid when it jumped out of gear while overtaking a row of cars at 100+ mph. dealer recovered it, and after lots of arguing...bought it back off me.
Then did 10,000 trouble free miles in a year on a Ducati ST2, but could'nt resist another Bee-em.
No probs with my current R1100s.

Can't change down

The S developed a strange problem on Friday, changing up is no problem, but the bike refuses to change back down through the gears. If I stop and then pull the clutch lever in and out and change down using my hand while rocking the bike back and forth [get's some strange looks in Tesco's carpark!] it changes down.
Bike is 2 1/2 years old with 35k on the clock.
Is it just the clutch cable that's going or is there something more sinister involved???
Any advice appreciated.
cheers

You can rule out the clutch cable... it's hydraulic
Might be worth checking that clutch fluid level is OK and bled/changed if required. Apart from that I don't know, sounds potentially expensive.
Is it OK in first gear with the clutch in or is there any drag?

RB,
Mine used to jump out of 5th a bit when new (read less than 15,000 miles) but it's been pretty good (read better but not perfect) now it's got closer to 30,000.

P.S. Why do people with Blue cards seem to think they can park in stupid, dangerous places, just because it's convienient!!!!

Sorry about that, just noticed the age of the latest/original posts.
Down changing, only get problems like that if the engine's off or pulled to a junction and try to block change 4 gears etc.

Check that there is not a small stone under the gear shift linkage.

Seems to have righted itself this morning, adding weight to the stone theory... maybe it's a member of this forum spreading gravel up the A3......
