Pannier lids

Post by Howard »

Hi,
I have just bought some BMW panniers, but the pannier lids seem to be a bit small, will these be City Lids?
My next question is that there are some lids for sale on ebay which seem to be bigger but they are advertised for a K series BMW, will these lids fit the panniers I have for a R1100S?
Next question, has anyone painted/sprayed their panniers to match their bike? i.e. Boxercup blue! Is this colour available from BMW for panniers?
cheers guys
Howard.
P.S. Anyone got deeper lids for sale?

Howard,

I have some regular fat lids cluttering up my garage, which you can have for the price of the postage to get them to your neck of the woods. I'll drop you a PM with my contact details.

Cheers,

Paul
You really need only two tools: WD-40 and duct tape. If it doesn't move and it should, use WD-40. If it moves and shouldn't, use the tape.

Gripperod,
I think Paul is sorting me out with the fat lids which I may spray, but I am going to keep the small lids just in case I ever sell the panniers.

No probs. as I remember (from my night school painting course) for plastic and flexible stuff you add a plasticiser (is that a real word?) at about 20%. Your local paint shop will sort you out, it makes the paint flexible and stops it flaking.

p.s. The paint shop will also be able to mix you up the colour either from the BMW paint code or matching to a colour sample (take a bit of the bodywork in). If you use 2 pack (acrylic) its pretty evil stuff so you need an air fed mask when you spray, if you use cellulose you can get away with a cartridge mask. Due to "green" legislation lots of people are moving to water based paint but you have to lacquer it (or dont ride in the rain!) 8)

You now know everything I know about paint

Here's a pic of my Boxer Cup with painted City Lids.

They are a lot handier than the full-width lids.

Not sure how often the regular lids come up on Ebay, but I don't think I'd recommend painting them as it might look a bit OTT.

...and you defo don't want to go this far.................

Would look better if the lids were white red blue from the top front corner I think.

Hum gives me an idea could paint the lids on the GS RED.

It really would be a rare red one then :)
