Jumping out of gear
Went for a blat on the BCR on saturday - hadn't used it for a couple of weeks so it was good to be out on it in the cool dry weather (don't they run great when the air temp's like this?).
Anyway...
Coming back along the motorway (ok I was running late!) at around 6000rpm and full throttle in top, the bloody thing felt like it jumped out of gear then re-engaged. Now, my old 1150GS used to do this occasionally but that was when it was relatively new (ie <5000ish miles) and it eventually cured itself.
The BCR's now done 10.5k (8k in my hands) and has never done this before. It has though felt like it's been 'hunting' around this rpm under heavy throttle load, like badly balanced TB's would cause it to. However, the balance is pretty much spot-on so I can forget that. Now, a gearbox displaying such habits ain't going to last long if it's doing that at such speeds/loadings.
Anyone, who's had gearbox woes, suffered similar symptoms?

might be the selector forks - a six-speed box weak spot. The forks can distort which means that it doesn't get chucked into gear properly. Then the dogs wear, which makes it worse. That's why the symptoms are; jumping out/back in under load, but usually only in one gear, starts off occasional & gets worse. You can DIY, but you still need to split the box, you just don't have to completely dismantle it.
Mine feels like it drops out of sixth, but actually hasn't. And that's on steady loads. I'm putting it down to a leaking oil seal getting the clutch plates wet - though I have no normal signs of clutch slip when accelerating or 'working' the engine. I'm just trying to be opitmistic that it's not the gearbox input shaft or the selectors!

You still got the porridge in the gearbox that they pass off as oil??,mine has done a similar thing, but only a couple of times and some time ago,i put it done to operator error in not engageing it corectly in the first place,i'd also had trouble getting Mobil1 and put some other synthectic shit in,drained it out,got off my arse and tracked down some Mobil and it's been fine since.

If they gonna end up fetching the box out it might be worth letting Steve at Scriminger undercut the gears - makes for a lot smoother operationGromit wrote:Mine's still under the BMW warranty so will be mentioning this to them in the very near future.bigblackfalco wrote:I seem to remember mine did that in 5th if I really gave it some major pasty....but not in top.
Guess you'll be looking for another bike soon then.......![]()

Chris - been meaning to drain the tranny oil for bloody ages now, but a. I've lost my little cut-off 10mm Allen key for undoing the drain plug and b. I haven't got off my lazy arse yet to do it!! I realise putting the Mobil1 liquid magic in the box/diff does make a huge difference, but just slightly sceptical about it curing the sudden loss of drive I've been experiencing.
Al - I don't ride that regularly, but when I do go out for a spin I tend to cover a lot of miles (usually over 200).
Lloyd - thanks for the tip, may well look into this. Only problem being that BMW will no doubt frown upon such activities when under warranty.

Re read you post, mine did exactly the same and all but scared the crap of me,just pay a little more attention when changeing gear, and when i'm out on the motorway double check with my foot to make sure.
But the Old Mobil makes such a difference even from another make,it was after that i did it,pretty dam quick!!!!

Chris - sure, I read your post ok (and what you say is encouraging) but this is a slightly odd thing that's happening - one that I've never experienced before ie the 'hunting' from the motor at this rpm in top gear.
It's the same sensation as caused by a slight misfire (or that sickening feeling you get when a 2-stroke's about to nip up), only the engine's running sweet-as. I WILL get round to doing the oil though, and soon as poss as I agree it makes a very noticable difference.
Was hoping to take the bike out this afternoon but I've done my back in

Steve gets to do a lot of the gearbox stuff for the main dealers coz he's (a) cheap and the dealer can make money on it (b) he knows what he's doing so they get no comeback. May be worth checking and bung him a couple of quid while the box is there ??Gromit wrote: Lloyd - thanks for the tip, may well look into this.
