Need Help!
Not long ago I caught sight of a K1200S - and now I want one - in black, next year! It's not just the look of the bike, and the sound, it's my assumption that it may be a lot more comfortable on long tours (or 180 mile round-trips like we did last week). Before we moved to France I had a Blackbird which I just loved, and came to France on twice, with none of the aching bum problems that I get with my S. Had to sell the Bird when we came here due to the 100 bhp limit in France. Also found the seating position more comfy on the Bird (less upright than the S) - maybe because I'm tall? Anyway I need help convincing my hubby - ('Madman' on this site) that he should buy me a nice new shiny Black K1200S for my birthday in February! He argues ''Why have a K1200 if it has to be restricted?" Can you convince him that it doesn't matter because I'll never use all the power anyway, and besides he should be considering my derriere!
Maybe putting a request like this on a site full of S riders is a tad silly ... but if you don't think I'm completely mad please tell 'Madman'!

Thank you Thottlemeister. No you are not having one! I see no point in buying a 170 bhp bike only to have it restricted to 100bhp. Besides, I have to service it and an S is easier.
If you can find a none French dealer who is willing to de-restrict a K1200S then I might consider it and I'll have the K1200R sport too as it looks a little like a R1100S.
Stop trying to get the people on this site to support you in your quest for a new bike, or I'll take your back wheel off and I know that you can't put it back on.

There you go - possible solution:Madjude wrote:... and besides he should be considering my derriere! ...
Provide pictures of said derriere upon K and R for comparison!

I've ridden from the UK to southern Spain twice (return trips) on a Blackbird and it's nowhere near as comfortable as an R1100S. I've also done a fair bit of mileage on a K1200S - enough to judge its comfort. I'd put the K12S between the R11S and Blackbird in terms of comfort (weight on wrists, seat) but closer to the R11S than the Blackbird, if that makes sense.
I certainly wouldn't put the K12S ahead of the R11S (both with standard bars, seat and screen) for comfort.
I'd also hazard a guess that an unrestricted R11S will be faster and more satisfying to ride than a restricted K12S as the boxers have a lot more torque low down than the K engine. I got off a K12S onto my (admitedly fairly non-standard) 1150GS and the GS still felt quicker at sensible revs - the K only felt faster when wound up into the rev range where the restriction to 100bhp would really hit you.
Anyway, the K1200S is ugly compared to the R1100S

There isn't much, if anything you can do yourself on the new K12 engine. Other than changing oil that is. Granted, modern bikes don't need much more but the S is completely dependent on electronics and unfortunately regular maintenance depends for a large part on the ability to read the engine electronics. Which only dealers can.madman wrote:Besides, I have to service it and an S is easier.

You must either have a softer seat or a different shaped derriere! I found the Bird way more comfortable. Also the bars on the Bird were lower and again more comfortable. I get more wrist ache on the S. I guess I really need to ride a K 12 - and obviously would before I'd let my husband buy me one!

Ah! Now that I can't agree on! I've always been in love with the style of the K12's. I could always compromise with my husband ... and have one of each!

The seats on all three bikes were standard. As for the different shaped derriere, I'd certainly hope so - no offence intended, but I'd look pretty silly walking around with a female derriere....!Madjude wrote:You must either have a softer seat or a different shaped derriere!
The main differences in comfort between the bikes for me was in the amount of weight I had on my wrists (weight transfer up my arms causes me pain in the neck as well as, to a lesser degree, in my wrists) and the angle of my neck determined by how far forward/down I was leaning. The seats were probably similar - the last 300 miles of an 800 mile day on the Blackbird got a bit uncomfortable but 450 miles/8 hours (twisty roads, in case you wonder about my average riding speed!) on the 11S weren't a problem. I didn't ride the K12S for long enough to judge seat comfort - for a couple of hours it was fine.

No she won't, it is not hers it's mine. If she does not stop messing about on this very serious board, not only will I remove her back wheel, but I'll also disconnect her PC from the internet, don't forget Jude that I have the modem router down here and your PC is upstairs. Don't you have anything better to do? You should be writing your book and let me get on with my blog. I should not have to look on boxertrix, which I'll remind you I introduced you to, to see what havoc you are causing by mentioning bottoms to all these fine young men!
