Lennies Induct & SJ Powerfilter Report

I've been running a Lennies Induct with a regular K&N for the past year and recently purchased an SJ powerfilter which was fitted Sunday (together with a fresh fuel filter - nice job that!).

WOW! - what an improvement. The Induct on its own made a difference but combined with the filter, the result/$ is outstanding:

- engine spins more freely
- hesitancy between closed and open throttle has disapeared
- flat spot around 4k revs - gone
- revs like crazy between 5k and the limiter
- feels like a silky-turbine like 4 cylinder (well not quite

)

Result! Can't wait to balance the TBs and think about that PCIII.

p.s. the K&N air filter was in a terribly clogged state after 12k miles with insects, berries, road clag etc.. Don't forget to clean it regularly.

Good to hear that as I just (earlier today) ordered an SJ filter! How long did yours take to arrive? I need to do a service on the bike before a trip to Luxembourg on 7th October and I'd REALLY like to get the SJ filter fitted at the same time.

Still can't bring myself to stump up for a Lennies (does it have to be expensive carbon fibre stuck under there where no-one will ever see it?) so I'll try other alternatives first. I have a cunning plan......

Regarding your clogged standard K&N the theory is that the SJ solution doesn't get clogged anywhere near as easily/quickly as the cr*p original design.

Sproggy - I had mine hand carried from the US by a work colleague.

Gromit has ordered one so I'd check when his arrives. 10 working days should be about right - SJBMW despatch them same day as they are ordered.

As for clogging the filter, both the SJ filter (nozzle end) & Lennies provide a greater input area so more crap gets in I'm afraid.

The Lennies is c/f since an injection mould only works economically for a bizzillion units and I don't expect even he could forsee that many units being sold when the idea was first dreamt up.

The SJ filter is a larger area and the filter is held vertically so the bits of gravel (I kid you not) and other heavy bits of c*ap fall to the bottom of the casing

Of course injection moulding isn't feasible for short production runs, but grp is considerably cheaper than carbon fibre. And I for one wouldn't notice an extra couple of hundred grammes weight.

Got my filter this morning after paying a £30 duty !!!!. I am very happy indeed it does what i wanted and a well made product too.

I got an invoice from Parcelforce Worldwide this morning - £18 and some pennies VAT for the filter and £13.50 to Parcelforce for 'processing' it. Thieving scum. Having paid that by card over the phone I've been promised delivery of the filter tomorrow - it was being held hostage until I coughed up the VAT.

That means it's cost me somewhere in the vicinity (depending on exchange rates on my credit card) of £145 including purchase, shipping, VAT and that processing fee.

Anyway...

Fitted the new filter and housing etc on returning home - would've taken some piccies of it but was too eager to get it on the bike. Couple or 3 observations...

1. It's a rather lovely piece of machined alloy the SJ housing - real shame to have to hide it away in fact.
2. It fits the BM's airbox perfectly.
3. Lennie's induct doesn't like being fitted to the SJ's alloy housing. The 2 bolt holes don't line up exactly (I only got one screwed in) and it's a real sweat to get the induct to fit into the SJ part. However, it will go on, even if not being quite enough to push all the way down. Certainly snug enough to not leak air, and tight enough to need a good tug to remove. After the oop norf trip I'll strip it down again and very gently Dremmel away the housing until the induct drops in properly.

So...out onto the road.

First thing I noticed is the extra acceleration. Not a huge difference but there's more go below 4500rpm; flat spot less noticable. Bit more induction noise too which is quite nice. Engine revs more eagerly and is almost certainly a mite smoother.

When all's said, a worthwile mod.

When fitting the Induct,spray it with silicone,it'll go,and the more times you have it on and of the better it gets.

Good tip.

I used some rubber lubricant spray which I had left over from building a Caterham 7 years ago. Often comes in handy (in the garage you pervs)

I'll be interested to see how much (if any) difference I notice - I've got a standard intake as Motorworks told me they can't get lennies inducts any more because Wunderlich now have sole UK rights and I'm not paying their prices......

Maybe I can order direct from Lennie? I think someone mentioned that somewhere.....?
