Twinmax, V Morgan V Kids Balloon ??
In the bits and Bobs bit was this.
>>>As for the Twinmax,it's the only way to keep the fuel injectors balanced,<<<
I can't agree with that. I made a gadget in the 70's for balancing twins. It's an old screw top jar with two pipes soldered into the lid. A party balloon is attached to one of the pipes and the two pipes hooked up to each inlet. costs about 10 pence and works perfectly.
It works better than the Morgan that I bought at the NEC in a moment of weakness.
I can take a few pics if anyones interested but I haven’t figured out how to post them.

Just as a matter of interest at what mileage intervals should you balance the fuel injectors ? I've only done about 4K on my s since I got it earlier in the year and the performance has really gone off recently but I think it's a knacked air filter so have just ordered a K&N.

Look, I know someone else is itching to ask the same question but is to afraid to appear inept in front of you knowledgable chaps, so I will ask it on their behalf................
is this not something a dealer would check during a main service
and at what sort of age/millage would you need to check?
Fear not embarassed trixters, I shall ask the numpty questions that no else will

It would be a great help if someone just listed the things (and approx milage) of all the things that need doing to the engine apart from the obvious oil and spark plugs. The alternator belt also needs changing but this depends on the type of belt one has. Is the balancing of the fuel injectors a real pain to do and what's the best gauge (ballons aside !) for doing the job. Like Nu2beemers I'm totally new to the boxer engine so all these obvious things arn't quite so obvious to us.
Also, I don't intend taking my bike anywhere near a stealer so I'll be doing every servicing task myself.

Just to be clear we're talking about balancing the throttle bodies, not the injectors, aren't we?scotty wrote:Just as a matter of interest at what mileage intervals should you balance the fuel injectors ?
The official service schedule says it should be done every 6000 miles BUT it also states that it's a chargeable extra, so maybe dealers don't do it with a service unless you ask them to? It's a long time since I had an 1100/1150 dealer-serviced so I can't remember.
I tend to balance throttles probably around every 3000 miles or just before a long trip, or when the bike feels a bit rough..... It's a really easy job to do with a Twinmax!
I also believe that I take considerably more care in balancing than a dealer would, because it's me who's going to benefit from getting it just right. I've never used anything other than a Twinmax so can't comment on what's best for the job.
I use a very old Mercury "Carbtune". So sensitive it even works on the pathetic wheeze you get on 2-stroke twins (I bought it to balance a Kawasaki KR1-S in 1990).
I haven't done a full balance on my 11S, but just to keep things balanced when adjusting the idle (with the brass screws). Why do dealers always set tickover so low?

When first bought my Twinmax,i bet i was doing the bike every 500 miles,a combination of me learning how to use it best and getting the bike set up,even to the point of haveing a small nurled wheel made that fits on the cable so you can hold it better when your locking the ajuster up,because even doing that can upset the setting.
Just remember your only setting one cylinder,i've never touched the left side ever, just set the right side up to it,over a period of time got it that good,i hardly ever need the TM,even when the bike had a real pasting it still keeps in tune.
As has already been said, want a good job doing???,then do it yourself!!!

The factory manual says tickover should be between 1000 and 1100rpm which is pretty slow - I guess dealers just stick to this value. I set mine up to a fraction below 1100 last weekend when I did a full zero-zero setup of the TPS, balance etc and I think I'll increase it a bit mainly because having it set so low gives quite aggressive engine braking on a closed throttle which, when riding two-up in traffic as I do every day, doesn't make for smooth progress.jivebiker wrote:Why do dealers always set tickover so low?
Never thought to do that... the S takes some careful throttle action to ride smoothly through traffic 2up. Might give that a try...I'll increase it a bit mainly because having it set so low gives quite aggressive engine braking on a closed throttle which, when riding two-up in traffic as I do every day, doesn't make for smooth progress.

When I say low...
Mine seems to come back from each service set to 950 to 1000rpm, resulting in engine stalling during downchanges, stops and when filtering. Bloody dangerous!
I have now set to 1050 to 1100 (it varies a bit) which is much better.
Also my fast idle was set way too fast, making the engine race when engaged. I reset to give about 2000 when warm. I still have the extra lever pull when starting.
I use the fast idle lever to prevent rear lock-ups in the wet when I'm ...er ....getting a shift on. Did any of the Boxer Cup racers do that I wonder? or did they just enjoy backing it in too much!

Did anyone ever build an injector test rig so that you could fit a matched set of injectors ?sproggy wrote:Just to be clear we're talking about balancing the throttle bodies, not the injectors, aren't we?scotty wrote:Just as a matter of interest at what mileage intervals should you balance the fuel injectors ?
