déjà vu

What the feck is it about these up north tours. Last Autumn one I was meant to go on 2 years ago, my flippin crown bearing decided to go a week before the gig.

Coming home tonight I had a few slides but as it was intermitently either pouring with rain or very bright sunlight in spray etc I decided it was just the conditions and the fact my rear tyre is begining to square. As I got nearer home I thought I could smell gear oil but as I was in heavy Friday traffic thought it must be a hot lorry or summit. Had a bit of a slide in the dry as I turned into my road... in the dry.... ummmm

Stopped outside the house, got off the bike, and .... now call me a brain surgeon... but I don't think the back tyre is supposed to look like this, and I didn't notice the puddle on the wheel when I cleaned it at the weekend either!

So it would appear the rear seal has gone, and from the looks of the state of the oil, maybe one of the bearings too. I think it's done about 50k since the last change :?

Still - she's not getting out of it that easily. I've got a spare diff and shaft in the garage so hopefully I'll manage to get it sorted this w/e. Might have to clean that tyre though!

Jason

And Paul mate - why won't my images appear please? That URL will work in a browser?

There's a seal soon to finish on fleabay that I was after for a spare.

There's every chance that it was the bearing going that took out the seal retaining spring, rather than just the seal going on its own. Motorworks turned one around for me overnight just the other week, as it happens....

Well, grasshopper, it is because your linky-link is not an image but an html page. You need to refer to the url of the jpeg image file, which is this case is http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/eastleighsc/wheel.jpg. If you stick that between the img tags it will work a treat:

Top tip: if you want to post a link to an image from another web page, open up the page, right mouse click over the image and select "Properties..." which will then bring up a dialogue containing the URL of the picture, which you can paste onto your posting and wrap up between img tags.

HTH,

Paul

What a twat am I.... It must be cos I bought a GS or something....I've turned into a tosser:shock:

Chears Paul

Bob - I could bring the GS.... if I can get the exhaust back on. I went to remove the manifold and, you guessed it, one of the studs snapped in the head  I'm told they're ok with 1 bolt though but I'm still trying to get the little bugger out today. Having the mainfold and skid pan off really show how scabby the bottom half is  Archie has told me the best way to put it right but I'll wait till after the winter I reckon then do it

Me--109. So you reckon it's the crown bearing eh? I'll take it appart and see if the retainer has come out then I might be in touch re replacement. I reckon I'll try it myself having been stung for £400 the last time S  C had a go.

Gus mate - good to see you. How is the beast coming along then?

Re the oil I guess I was a bit lucky cos most the ride home it was pissing down and probably keeping the tyre a bit cleaner, it certainly wasn't any riding god prowess 8) . I did have a 'double slide' on one roundabout - you know the Whoops ahhhhh WHOOPS ahhh kind - only little ones but enough to get the old 'winker stinker valve' twitching  That didn't scare me as much as screaming off a roundbout on Wednesday into the fast lane of a dual carrageway only to be confronted by a car parked in the fast lane.... asking directions of some bloke walking down the central reservation:shock: W*NKER!

Anyway, my old baby is such a good old girl - she always seems to see me home whatever is wrong with her  I'm sure the other bevel box will slide on easy even if I have to just transfer the paralever bearings over

OK - took the back wheel off and immediately the seal fell off the back of the bevel box. The Crown bearing seems to have self destucted and the bearing cage has roggered the seal - It doesn't look very healthy to me

Image

Perhaps I had better fix that then
