cast iron discs

Post by cc mac »

I was looking in the Motorworks catalogue. They say that the cast iron discs are cheaper and better than BMW's stainless ones. Anyone have any experience on the matter?

They're cheaper, last longer, offer better grip (and so braking force) but rust and look horrible if not used in the damp weather.

This is what I know, but probably best to wait for some of the more experienced guys to respond before making up your mind.

I agree with Adam with vertually everything. I had a pair and they looked shite even in the dry. In the wet they are initially very SCARY  but then work ok. You'll have a flippin nightmare keeping your front wheel clean mate!

M&P do some stainless ones I think for under £100 each which I'll get next time I reckon.

Sorry, can't help on the cast iron disc question other than yes, they'll rust like hell but was wondering if the disc bolts are loctited on?

I've sheared a few on an old Suzuki GS before I realised that I should use the heat gun first.

Braking power on my BCR has never been an issue, so don't know why you would want (or need) more! :?

IMO just the aggro of keeping them clean is more than enough insentive to go stainless, irrespective of cost.

Ya pays ya money and makes ya choice

Cast discs!! Reminds me of the 70's and the old Ducatis with Brembo's. Superb braking with 'feel'. But ugly. Try PFM discs or, if you can find them, Galfers. I rode through the worst rain storm ever last Thursday, A303, 200 yard visibility, I mean the worst rain I have ever encountered in any vehicle; my green EBC pads on Galfers were a real comfort and the bike performed superbly, really rock steady.

If and when my discs need replacing (42K) I was considering cheaper and hopefully better replacements.
