"Top end" noise

Can someone tell me how much top end noise is acceptable when starting the bike? I seem to have a second (maybe less) of what sounds like rattling before it all goes quiet. I read before (can't remember if it was on this site or the previous incarnation) that some chain tensioner noise was quite normal.
Thanks.

This is a mixture of cam chain noise and lack of oil pressure noise.
It is fine/perfectly acceptable. It takes a little time for the oil pressure to build up.
Every Boxer engine does the same thing!
HTH?

Yes thanks. Reassuring. Used to have a Monster which was noisy too but in a different way, and I think it's probably just a case of what you're used to.
Cheers.

Running in quicker!Infact drain your oil and run the bike for a couple minutes. That should get the rings nice and bedded. No need to wait for 20000 miles.

What le grand falco noir said.
I've owned one or 3 Boxers (259's) and they've all done it. Bless their little characterful hearts
