ignition timing
How do you check this? I have shone an ignition strobe through the crankcase bung-hole, but there are no marks that I can see. Does it have to be set with the BMW workshop tool with the crank at tdc as described in the Book, and no other way?

Hi oyster
To check use the strobe. The engine should be warm and a idle about a 1000rpm.You should have the timing marks OT=TDC.Z=full advance.S=6 degrees intial advance.
You should be looking for the S mark as the standard set timing under strobe.
You can adjust the timing by moving the magnetic gate on its slots.

I figured there must be a purpose to that crankcase bung other than to watch the toothed edge of the flywheel going round. But WHERE are the referenece marks???????? I couldnt see either a pointer Or any lettering.
Do I have to take all the injector inlet off and view it at a different angle????
