Just to add to what's already been said, I recently upgraded the maps on mine to v8.
Total cost for the upgrade (from v6 - I skipped v7) was £50 inc VAT.
Word of warning, though: unlike v6, the new v8 maps cover much larger sections of the country, so you can't fine-tune the areas quite so well as you could with v6. Couple that with more up-to-date information generally, and you can fit... well, England, on a 128MB card. That's all. 256MB cards for it, which aren't standard Compact Flash like the 2610 and above, cost at least £110... which is extortionate for the size, IMO, but the only way you'll be able to get the whole of the UK (or England and France in my case) on it.
As far as the unit itself goes, can't fault it (for the age). They even replaced the nadgered screen FOC on my father's SP3 when it got dropped; which can't be bad. They'll also fully refurbish an old unit for £100 (which seems a lot cheaper when you spent £700 on it originally than if you buy it for £150, I'll grant you

).
