I have just got hold of a Garmin 2610 and I am looking into the different mounting options.
Could any of you knowledgable chaps let me know where and how I could mount an additional power socket near the clocks to power the unit.
I have bought an installation kit which contains the socket and cables etc but I was wondering where it should be mounted and where i should take the live feed from.
Many thanks.

I mounted mine in the cockpit area to the right and below the clocks. I ran the fused cable back to the battery so it was always a live feed but those little smarter with electronics than me have taken a switched feed from near or in the fuse box.

Forgive me father for I have sinned... ex S owner moved onto pastures new with four cylinders and a chain... and back to a twin, albeit in a V.
Very easy on the S. Just get a spare Garmin power cable from the BMW dealer and wire it into the instruments. It takes so little power that I have not even fused mine.
Looking from the front of the bike, on the left hand side of the back of the intrument cluster you will see a number of cables with ring tag terminals on them. Brown one is earth and Black with a green trace is ignition controlled live (to the instrument lights). There is also one that is permanent live but I cannot remember the colour, I think that it's the red one.
To gain access you will need to remove the front part of the fairing and the headlight. I think that the whole job took less than 40 minutes.
The Garmin plug on my bike is then pushed into a small plastic cup fastened onto the front of the top yolk when not in use. It has worked fine for the last 18 months.

As Madman says, the unit draws so little current - you can power it from anywhere. I would favour the switched output however. If you want to remove the complete mount/GPS - you might consider drilling a 12mm hole in the black panel to the left of the instrument cowl and fitting a power outlet (bulkhead fitting). Take the feed for this from the battery with an in-line fuse, and dependant upon the fuse rating - you can run anything you want from it in the future.
Even those comms packages; Starcom, Autocom etc can be powered from the rear light feeder, which gives a good, switched supply.
Enjoy the GPS - Don't leave home without it!

If I am ever on life support - Unplug me......
Then plug me back in..........
See if that works .....

Thanks a lot for your comments guys.
I have an Autocom fitted already which is powered from the rear light feed as suggested.
For the GPS I have bought a kit which includes a bulkhead BMW type socket and all of the required cable & fittings etc to fit near the clocks.
I think that I will wire the socket directly from the battery though so that it is permanently live instead of switched. I think that it will prove more useful for routeplanning etc on the bike when I dont have to have the ignition on or engine running.
Thanks again.

Permanent live can still come from behind the instruments as the clock is permanent live. The instrument lights are only on with ignition.
